Gladwin Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 19, 1988, in Clare. Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister,
Shantella Clancy, at home; 3 brothers, Ronnie Smith, Ryan Keeton and Gordon
Arft Jr., all at home; his grandparents, Raymond and Lucille Arft of Beaverton;
and his great grandparents, Herb and Mildred Leach of Oxford, Roy and Dora
Saeger of Beaverton and Iva Rubio of Sterling Heights. Rites were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Hall
Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. Pastor Roger Hardy officiated and burial was in

W. ARFT (29 JUNE 1940 - 1 FEB 1996) Raymond W. Arft, 55, of Beaverton, died Thursday,
Feb. 1, 1996 at Gratiot Community Hospital following a long illness. Born Aug.
29, 1940 in Rochester, he resided in Beaverton for the past 11 years since
moving from Pontiac. Mr. Arft had been employed as a repairman at GM Truck and
Coach in Pontiac until retiring in 1985. He married the former Lucille Sleeper
Aug. 27, 1960 in Pontiac. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters,
Debra and husband Mike Gossett of Beaverton, and Donna and husband Scott Higdon
of Midland; 2 sons, Gordon and wife Jerilynn of Beaverton, and Guy and wife
Corrine of Beaverton; his mother, Iva Rubio of Beaverton; one brother, Leonard
of New Haven; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father,
Erich in 1959 and a grandson, Erich. Rites were held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Christ the
King Lutheran Church in Gladwin. Pastor David Sprang officiated and burial was
in the Arbutus Cemetery, Beaverton. Arrangements were handled by the Hall

Bower Avery died Nov. 13, 1930, of typhoid fever at her home at Highwood. She
was born at Highwood Sept. 20, 1915, and has lived here all her life. She is

18, 1997 at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Home, Gladwin after a short illness. Born
July 5, 1909 in Gladwin County, he lived in Gladwin his whole life. Carl had been employed by The Dow Chemical Company
in Midland and was retired from there. He was a member of the Masons in Midland. Surviving are three daughters, Virginia and husband
Robin Bard, Bonnie and husband Clair Hammond and Betty Loar, all of Beaverton;
one son, Donal and wife Joyce of Beaverton; one brother, Floyd of
Thompsonville; one sister, Bessie Riley of Dade City, Fla; several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by two brothers. Arrangements were in charge of the Hall Funeral

Bower, 66, of Beaverton, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at MidMichigan Medical
Center-Midland following a short illness. Born Aug. 8, 1935 in Midland, he was
the son of Carl and Alice (Fritz) Bower. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin
County. Donald married Joyce (Sian), Dec. 19, 1953 in Sanford. He worked as an
engineer for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, retiring in 1987 after 20
years. He was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655. Besides his
wife he is survived by one son, Steven and wife Susan Bower of Coleman; one
daughter, Lori and husband Mark Doud of Beaverton; six grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty and husband Harlan Kidder of Maine and
Virginia and husband Robin Bard of Beaverton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debra Myers; one sister,
Bonnie Hammond; and one brother, Clair Hammond. Graveside
services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at the Arbutus Cemetery in
Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pardee Cancer Fund. Hall

illness. Born in Decature, Ill., July 29, 1906, he had been a resident of
Gladwin County for 38 years, coming here from Ann Arbor. Mr. Brewer and the
former Lorn Roach were married October 1, 1925, in Ann Arbor. Surviving are his wife, Lorna; 2 sons, William of

Born in Kingston on August 2, 1908, she came to Gladwin County in 1937, from
Ann Arbor. The former Lorna Roach, she was married to Lodell Brewer on October
1, 1925, in Ann Arbor. He preceded her in death on June 2, 1975. Surviving are 2 sons, William of Beaverton and Larry
of Mesa, Ariz.; 6 daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Betty) Adcock and Mrs. (Marguerite)
Markell of Pontiac, Mrs. Marion Hines of Chesaning, Mrs. Richard (Catherine)

Beaverton, died Sunday, Aug. 25, in the Midland Hospital Center after a short
illness. Born in Ann Arbor April 3, 1926, he came to Gladwin County in 1937.
Mr. Brewer was a carpenter and a veteran of World War II. He was married to the
former Sylvia Wendt Dec. 12, 1982, in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 step-sons,
Roger Roberson of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Roberson of Hope and Brent Roberson of
Midland; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Tom (Vicki) Ziemer of Beaverton and Mrs. Greg

M. (HACKETT) BURKE (12 JAN 1860 15 OCT 1924) MRS. ISAAC A. BURKE Rosa M., wife of Isaac A. Burke, died Oct. 15, 1924,
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clara Gruehl, at Ogden, Lenawee county, aged
64 years, 9 months and 3 days, of acute indigestion, after a weeks illness.
Rosa M. Hackett was born Jan. 12, 1860, at Penfield, Calhoun county, and was
the daughter of George W. and Louisa M. Hackett. She was married in 1876 to
Isaac A. Burke at Bellevue, Eaton county. They moved to Gladwin county in 1892,
and lived here 30 years, until two years ago, when they remained a year, then
returned to Michigan and have since made their home with their daughter at
Ogden. To them nine children were born, only three of whom survive, Mrs. Clara
Gruehl of Odgen, Fred Burke of Detroit, and John A. Burke of Bellevue, with the
husband. Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at Ogden. The
body was brought to Gladwin Thursday, and taken to Arbutus cemetery for burial
Friday, accompanied by Mr. Burke and Mrs. Gruehl of Ogden, John Burke of
Bellevue and Mr. and Mrs. Herb Furgeson of Tecumseh. Mrs. Burke was a faithful member of the Free
Methodist church. During her residence in Gladwin county she gained a large
circle of friends, who will regret to hear of her death. Gladwin County Record

a short illness. He was born in Gladwin on Oct. 20, 1942 to Cullie and Beatrice

Thomas C. Coash, 72, of Beaverton, died May 18, 2004, at home. He was born September 18, 1931, to
Clinton and Mary (Connelly) Coash in Saginaw. He served in the United States
Army during the Korean War. He worked as a supervisor at General Motors in
Saginaw. Previously of Saginaw, he lived in Gladwin for the past 25 years. He
was a member of the VFW Post 1859 in Carrollton, the National Rifle Association, and the Michigan Sheriff
Association. He was also a Boy Scout
leader for Troop 325 in Saginaw. He is
survived by three sisters, Margaret and Jim Ford of Rockford, Mary and Les Meehleder of Rockford,
and Theresa Slagle of Midland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his parents. Special thanks to the Mercer family and his extended family

services were held Friday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin,
with Rev. James Hoggard officiating. Burial was at Arbutus Cemetery in

Crook , age 77, died June 24, 2002 at his home in Beaverton, Michigan. He was
born May 13, 1925 to Herbert and Hazel (Kipp) Crook in Hazel Park, Michigan. On
July 10, 1979 he married Mary Atherton at Beaverton. Victor was Maintenance
Technician for the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, retiring in 1963. He then worked
as a heavy equipment operator for Grandsden in Edenville, Michigan, retiring in
1987. He had been a resident of Gladwin County since 1963, having previously
lived in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a member of the Church of Daniels Band, the
Fleet Reserve #358, Skidway Lake, and Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655. He is
survived by his wife, Mary Crook; his son Alan (Gemey) Crook of Hawaii; his
step children, Cindy (Tony) Peacock of Beaverton, Dennis (Sheryl) Doan of
Gladwin, John (Trisa) Doan of Beaverton, and William (Marion) Doan of Tawas;
thirteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brothers, Rev. Norris
Crook of Lehigh Acres, Florida, and Frank Crook of Lakeworth, Florida; his
sisters, Rachel Conner of Willard, Ohio, and Virginia Pietryzk of Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his

Thursday, April 22, at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mr. Dagley had
been in ill health for several months. Mr. Dagley was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April
13, 1877, and lived in Flint prior to coming to Buckeye township to make his
home. For many years he has been correspondent for The Record for the southwest
Buckeye area. Funeral services were held at the Hall Funeral Home
here Sunday, April 25, with the Rev. R. H. Nicodemus officiating. Burial was in
the Arbutus cemetery. His wife, Mrs. Bertha Dagley, and several children

16, 1997 in Gladwin after a long illness. Born Jan. 29, 1911 in Bangor, Maine,
she married Ernest E. Damon Aug. 15, 1935 in Stoneham, Mass. He preceded her in
death Feb. 16, 1984. She had been employed by TRW of Troy, retiring in
1972 after 30 years. She lived in Gladwin County since 1972, previously living
in Detroit. Surviving are one son, Kenneth and wife Dolores of
Sterling Heights; four brothers, Robert and Donald Cutter of Florida, Howard
Cutter of Michigan and Bob Cutter of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and many
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Skurya,
April 28, 1973. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hall
Funeral Home, Gladwin chapel with the Rev. Deane B. Wyllys officiating. Burial

following an illness of several months. She was born in Henry County, Ohio on
July 26, 1884 and had lived in Gladwin County since 1907. Mrs. Dodd was a member
of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. On April 27, 1951, she was married to
Raymond Dodd in Midland. Surviving are her husband; one son, Laurence Measel
of Gladwin County; three daughters, Mrs. Nellie McColley of Gladwin, Mrs.
Mildred Hund of Beaverton and Mrs. Arvilda Parkins of Detroit; three sisters,
Mrs. Tillie Mitchell of Hamler, Ohio, Miss Bertha Fox and Miss Nellie Fox of
Toledo; and 12 grandchildren. Four daughters and one son preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at

until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Cedar River Chapel,
Beaverton. Mr. Dombrowski and the former Agnes Shaw were married March 3, 1978,

Detroit six years ago. Mrs. Fromer was a member of Holy Gospel Church, Detroit,
the Billings Sunday School, and attended the Gladwin Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, George H.; six sons,

HENRY FROMER (20 DEC 1888 29 DEC 1972) GEORGE FROMER George H. Fromer, 84, of 1087 Howard Rd., Beaverton,
died Friday, Dec. 29, at the Gladwin Area Hospital. He was born in Hurley, So.
Dak., Dec. 20, 1888, and attended Wyoming Seminary in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.,
graduating in 1909. Mr. Fromer and the former Florence Foster were married in
Binghampton, N.Y., August 25 1913, and came to Detroit in 1916 where he was
employed as a die sinker at Ford Motor Co. Prior to that he had farmed at Lake
Geneva, Wisc., for a time. He retired in 1954 and they moved to Beaverton. Mr.
Fromer was a lay preacher and member of Hope Gospel Church in Detroit and lay
preacher and Sunday school teacher at the Billings Sunday School in Billings
Township. Mrs. Fromer died Jan. 12, 1961. Surviving are six sons, George H. Jr. of Brazil,
Richard of Ann Arbor, Donald of Beaverton, James of Gladwin, Lawrence of Mt.
Morris, and Dick of Riverdale, Ill.; three daughters, Miss Margaret Fromer of

horse trailers, fixing tack, and throwing hay for the girls and their horses,
Mark was an avid fly fisherman, catching trout, bass and bluegill whenever he
had the chance. Dozens of trails leading to Mark is also survived by his parents;
brothers, Dave Grant of Beaverton, Mike (Cindy) Grant of Colorado, Scott
(Colleen) Grant of Beaverton, Gordon (Karlina) Grant of Midland, Douglas
(Christina) Grant of Tennessee; father-in-law Edward Dailey of Beaverton; and
several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Florence

Sunday, July 13, 1986, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born Oct.
17, 1923, in Bad Axe. He was the owner/operator of Gravelles Meat Market in
Nashville, where he had been a resident since February of 1978. Prior to that
he lived in Gladwin County. He married the former Shirley Ruthig, Nov. 28,
1946, in Ulby. He leaves his wife; sons Donald Gravelle of Saginaw
and Richard Gravelle of Gladwin; daughters Lavila Edick and Lonalee Smith, both
of Gladwin; five grandchildren; his mother Edith Gravelle of Bad Axe; and a
sister, Marykee Romaker of Lowell. Services will be held at 1 p.m Wednesday at the Hall
Funeral Homes Gladwin Chapel, with evangelist Bruce Mayo officiating. Burial

Jan. 16, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a long illness. Born
in Ulby, she was a self-employed as a beautician and lived in Gladwin County
since 1961, in Midland for the past few years, and previously lived in Bad Axe.
Shirley married Douglas Gravelle, Nov. 28, 1946 in Ubly. He preceded her in
death July 13, 1986. Surviving are two sons, Richard and wife Joyce of
Gladwin and Donald and wife Sharon of Saginaw; two daughters, Lavila and
husband Tim Edick of Gladwin, and Lonalee and husband Randy Maier of Midland;
two brothers, Alger Ruthig of Gladwin and Douglas Ruthig of Sunberry, Ohio;
nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
nine brothers and sisters. Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19 at Hall
Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with Mark Sherfield officiating. Burial was in

March 13, 2006 at Mesa General Hospital in Mesa, Arizona following a sudden
illness. He was born in Bosier City, Louisiana on Sept. 4, 1952 to Durell and
Helen (Conway) Lamentola. He married the former Teri Jean Rechtermann in
Atlanta, Michigan on July 23, 2003. He served in the U.S. Marines, and was a
corrections officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections in Standish. He
lived in Gladwin County since 1993, having previously resided in St. Louis,
Michigan. Surviving him are wife, Teri, two sons, Christopher
(Charity) Lamentola of St. Louis, Michinga and Timothy (Heather) Lamentola of
Breckenridge; one daughter Monica Lamentola of Taylor; two step-children, Mandy
(Billy) Hunsaker and Jacob Wayne Hunsaker, both of Mesa, Arizona; his
grandchildren, Jessica (Sammy Jo), Kegan, David, Alex, Taylor, Madison and Audrey;

6, 1996 at the home of her daughter following a short illness.Born Aug. 9, 1908
in Sandusky, she resided in Gladwin since 1945 when she moved from Imlay City.
Mrs. Mercer was a member of the Highwood Church of Daniels Band in Gladwin. The
former Ida Mae Pettit married Josiah Mercer Jan. 2, 1925 in Sandusky. He
preceded her in death Oct. 28, 1979. Surviving are 2 sons, Charles and wife Floye of
Apopka, Fla. and Roger Samuel and wife Connie of Beaverton; one daughter, Betty
Mae Mercer of Gladwin; one brother, Everett Blakely of Detroit; one sister,
Mary Ann Queen of Imlay City; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchidren; and 5
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John Henry
Mercer March 10, 1988; and a sister, Clara Belle Reeves. Rites were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9 from the

Saturday, Sept. 21, 1991, in the MidMichgian Regional Medical Center, Gladwin,
after a long illness. Born in Lima, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1907, he had spent most of
his life in Gladwin County. Mr. Oard was an operator for Dow Chemical Co. and
retired in 1972. He also farmed. Mr. Oard and the former Mary Lehman were
married June 22, 1929, in Flint. She preceded him in death July 13, 1990. Surviving are 2 sons, Wilbur of Columbus, Ohio and
Brad of Beaverton; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marjorie) Clapp of St. Louis; 11
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son,
Harold, July 15, 1985. Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the

spent her lifetime here. Mrs. Oard was a member of the Cedar River Chapel,
Beaverton, and had been a volunteer for the Twin Council for The Aging. The
former Mary Lehman, she was married to James Oard, June 22, 1929, in Flint. Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sons,
Wilbur of Columbus, Ohio and Brad of Beaverton; one daughter, Mrs. Robert
(Marjorie) Clapp of St. Louis; a daughter-in-law, Agnes Oard of Beaverton; 11
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son,

Nov. 25, 1922 to Boyd and Virgie (Bushong) Oard in Gladwin. He married Betty
Rivers on Aug. 4, 1946 in Gladwin and has been a lifetime resident of ORVILLE
BOYD OARD (25 NOV 1918 - 15 APRIL 2000) Orville B. Oard, 81, of Gladwin died Saturday, April
15, 2000 at the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Born Nov. 25, 1918 in
Gladwin County, he was the son of S. Boyd and Virgie (Bushong) Oard. Orville
married Irene Emmendorfer, Oct. 18, 1947 in Saginaw. He was self-employed in
the excavating business for 48 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having
served with the 19th Station Hospital in Iran and is a lifetime member of VFW
Post 7303. Orville was a trustee with the Hay Township Board for many years. He
was an avid hunter, loved to travel, and enjoyed his grandchildren. Besides his
wife he is survived by seven daughters, Carolyn Swanstra of Gladwin, Cathryn
and husband Harold Loar of Beaverton, Cheryl-Oard-Irish of Flint, Cynthia and
husband Charles Simmons of Alma, Patricia Oard-Moore and husband Richard Moore
of Midland, Pamela Oard of Niles, and Barbara and husband Scott Buckley of
Danville, Va.; one son, William and wife Darlene of Gladwin; two brothers, Max
and Gerald, both of Gladwin; two sisters, Mary Jane Brushaber and Betty Jean
Myers, both of Beaverton; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cherlyn Anne in 1950. Services will

Carlinville, Illinois on Nov. 19, 1938 to Henry and Eunice (Lambert) Ehlers. He
married the former Nora Jean Todd on Aug. 30, 1985 in Gladwin; she survives
him. He was a plant manager for Retro Fit Machine-Ferguson Machine. He also
owned and operated the Seelbach Club 30 from 1985 until 1999. Paulie was a
veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Albright Shores FOE. Surviving
besides his wife, Nora; a son, Lance (Naomi) Seelbach of Maine; a daughter,
Trina (Geoff) Putman of Fairfax, Virginia; two grandchildren, Austin and Katie
Putman; two step-daughters, Kristina Grabowski of Minneapolis and Tamara
Grabowski of New Mexico; his father-in-law Robert Todd of Florida; his aunt

JANE SMITH (1931 6 MAY 1939) GIRL, 7, KILLED IN AUTO CRASH A seven-year-old Buckeye township child was killed
Saturday afternoon in a two-car automobile collision involving, members of the same family who
were close neighbors. Betty Jane Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
Smith, died of injuries suffered when the car in which she was riding struck one driven by a cousin
on the River road, one and one-half miles south of Gladwin. The car in which Betty Jane, her mother, and five
brothers and sisters were riding was. traveling north on the River road at about 5: p. m. and was
driven by a cousin, Roy Collins, according to Sheriff Ray Cowell. At an intersection near the
Smith home, Collins told the Sheriff, he saw another car backing into the highway
to turn around, but paid little heed as he expected the car to stop. Driver of the car which was turning around was
Leonard J. Riley, another cousin and neighbor. He apparently failed to observe the on-coming
machine, and the two crashed at the corner. Betty Jane, sitting near an open window, was thrown
from the car by the impact. When the cars struck, Collins lost control and his auto
rolled onto the child, crushing her body against the road. None of the other passengers of either car were
injured. The child was rushed in Riley's car to the Gladwin Hospital, but was dead before treatment
could be administered. All persons riding in the cars are related and live
in the vicinity of the accident. In the car with the victim were her mother,
her sisters, Barbara and Marian, and her brothers, Robert, Jack, and James. In the Riley car were his wife, Gertrude, and their
one-year-old child. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in the
Assembly of God Church. The Rev. A. Biggs officiated. Burial was in Buckeye

Jacob and Sarah Hall, was born in Bedford county, Penn., June 16, 1858, and
departed this life March 29, 1919, at 10 a.m., after a lingering illness of
about six years from cancer and heart trouble. She with her parents moved from
Bedford county, Penn. to Noble county, Indiana, in the year of 1865 where she
resided until she was united in marriage to James Smith of Williams county,
Ohio, where they resided until 1910 when they purchased a farm and moved to
Gladwin county, Mich., making their home here for five years. then returned to
Williams county, Ohio, residing there three years, then returning to Gladwin
county in Oct. 1918. Although she never united with any church she was a true
Christian, a loving mother and loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, James Smith, and 10
children Rosa Countryman of Elkhart, Ind., Libby Burleu and Thomas Smithof
Williams county, Ohio, S. C. Smith and Letha Rhinehart of Calhoun county, Clara
Brown of Branch county, Mich. Cody Smith of Williams county, Ohio, now with the
army of occupation in Germany; Elma Arkwright, Hazel Rise and Laura Smith of
Arbutus; three brothers, three sisters, 20 grandchildren and one great

formerly of Gladwin, died Friday, July 15, in the Midland Hospital following a
long illness. Born in Jackson on July 26, 1906, she had spent most of her life
in Gladwin until moving to Midland 10 years ago. Mrs. Smith was employed for
several years at Dell Smith Furniture in Gladwin and was a member of the
Midland Assembly of God Church. The former Flora Riley, she was married to Lawrence
Smith in 1929 in Jackson. He preceded her in death in 1960. Surviving are 6
sons, Robert of Midland, Jack and Richard of Gladwin, James and Delbert in
Florida and Frank of Oregon; 2 daughters, Mrs. Barbara Shitsman and Mrs. James
(Merian) White of Midland; 6 brothers; 5 sisters; 25 grandchildren and 5 great

on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
He was born on June 15, 1969 in Madison Heights to James and Sharon (Vipond)
Spencer, Sr. He married the former Cecilia Lloyd in Florida on June 15, 1997.
She survives him. Her grew up in Gladwin
County and graduated from Capacs High School in 1987. He enjoyed hunting and
fishing. He was a veteran of Desert Storm. Surviving
besides his wife Cecilia are four children, James R. Spencer III of Gladwin,
Heather M. Spencer of Lapeer, Sara Spencer of N. Carolina, and Ashley Spencer
of Lapeer; his mother Sharon Spencer of Gladwin; grandmother Josephine Vipond
of Gladwin; brother Michael McIntyre of California; sisters Kathryn (Alan)
Thomas and Holly Spencer, both of Gladwin, and Donna (Matt) Fullerton of Garden
City; and mother in law Patricia Lloyd of Gladwin. He was predeceased by his
