Erich William Arft, infant osn of Gordon Arft and Jeri Keeton of 1500 S. Hay Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly Friday, March 11, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 19, 1988, in Clare.

 

Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Shantella Clancy, at home; 3 brothers, Ronnie Smith, Ryan Keeton and Gordon Arft Jr., all at home; his grandparents, Raymond and Lucille Arft of Beaverton; and his great grandparents, Herb and Mildred Leach of Oxford, Roy and Dora Saeger of Beaverton and Iva Rubio of Sterling Heights.

 

Rites were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. Pastor Roger Hardy officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 3-16/1988 Column – 3 Page – 2.

 

RAYMOND W. ARFT (29 JUNE 1940 - 1 FEB 1996)

 

Raymond W. Arft, 55, of Beaverton, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 1996 at Gratiot Community Hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 29, 1940 in Rochester, he resided in Beaverton for the past 11 years since moving from Pontiac. Mr. Arft had been employed as a repairman at GM Truck and Coach in Pontiac until retiring in 1985. He married the former Lucille Sleeper Aug. 27, 1960 in Pontiac.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Debra and husband Mike Gossett of Beaverton, and Donna and husband Scott Higdon of Midland; 2 sons, Gordon and wife Jerilynn of Beaverton, and Guy and wife Corrine of Beaverton; his mother, Iva Rubio of Beaverton; one brother, Leonard of New Haven; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Erich in 1959 and a grandson, Erich.

 

Rites were held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Christ the King Lutheran Church in Gladwin. Pastor David Sprang officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery, Beaverton. Arrangements were handled by the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton chapel. Gladwin County Record dated 2-7/1996 Column – 2 Page - 7

 

CHARLOTTE (BOWER) AVERY (20 SEP 1915 - 13 NOV 1930)

 

Charlotte Bower Avery died Nov. 13, 1930, of typhoid fever at her home at Highwood. She was born at Highwood Sept. 20, 1915, and has lived here all her life. She is survived by her husband Albert Avery, infant daughter, Leela, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bower, four brothers, Carl, David, Floyd and Peter, and sister, Bessie Bower. KENNETH F. AYLIFFE (18 JULY 1918 - DEC 1978)

 

Kenneth F. Ayliffe, 60, of Beaverton, died Monday in his home. He was born July 18, 1918, in Clio. Mr. Ayliffe owned and operated Ayliffe Concessions for 25 years and was a Gladwin County resident for the past 23 years. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Marathon, Fla. He married the former Naomi Reffit on March 6, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio.
He leaves his wife; sons Robert Ayliffe of Mio, Morris Ayliffe of Fenton, and Carl Ayliffe of Holly; step-son Richard Donohoe of Crooksville, Ohio; step-daughters Mrs. Joe (Doris) Dobbs of Mancelona and Mrs. Jerry (Nancy) Tomaski of Clare; sister Mrs. Nolavay Sproul of Birch Run; 30 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Gladwin Chapel of the Hall Funeral home, with Allen T. Parker officiating. Burial will be in Arbutus cemetery, Gladwin County. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

ALBERT E. BARNARD (22 OCT 1918 - 15 JAN 2000)

Albert E. Barnard, 81, of Gladwin, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 at his home. He moved to Gladwin in 1975. Born Oct. 22, 1918 in Detroit, he was the son of Frank and Nettie Benaway Barnard. He worked for the Department of Street Railway for the City of Detroit. Albert married Anne Toner, Feb. 25, 1945. She preceded him in death March 6, 1997. He then married Mary Oliver, Oct. 18, 1997. He was a member of the Redford Twp. Eagles #2265, Harrison Moose Lodge, and was known as “Barnardo the Great,” for his magical acts.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Richard and wife Joann of Howell, Charles and wife Donna of Redford Twp., and Clarence and Lisa of Gladwin; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Albert Jack and one brother, Willis. Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Sisson Funeral Home with Dr. Rev. Deane Wyllys officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery.

ANNE E. (TONER) BARNARD (30 NOV 1922 - 6 MARCH 1997)

 

Anna E. Barnard, 74, of Gladwin, died Thursday, March 6, 1997 at the Gladwin Nursing Home. Born Nov. 30, 1922 in Detroit to William and Edith Toner, Anna married Albert Barnard.


Besides her husband she is survived by four sons, Albert of South Lyon, Richard of Howell, Charles of Redford and Clarence of Dearborn Heights; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

 

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with the Rev. Donald Haskell officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 3-12/1997 Column – 3 Page – 2.

Born in Buckeye Township, Nov. 2, 1914, he was employed by Monitor Sugar in Bay City until retiring in 1977. Surviving are 4 brothers, Joseph of Coleman, Nelson of Tawas, John of Burton and Orvail of Wayne; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Ethel Babcock of Saginaw and Mrs. Edith Milliman of Wheeler. Anthony Basner died at his home near Winegar, of heart failure, age 90 years. He was one of the first residents in that locality, where he resided many years. Funeral services were held Sunday at 10 a.m. Interment in Arbutus cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 3-6/1913 Column – 2 Page – 4.

Mrs. Bessie E. Bower, 85, of Winegars, died Monday, Nov. 29, in Midland following a long illness. Born in Yale on March 20, 1891, she had lived in Gladwin county 74 years. Mrs. Bower was a news correspondent for The Gladwin County Record for many years from the Highwood area. She was married to Peter S. Bower in 1908, in Gladwin. He preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 1974.

   Surviving are 3 sons, Carl and Floyd of Copemish and David of Suttons Bay; one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Riley of Sanford; 18 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. Two children preceded her in death.

   Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Robert Shoaff will officiate and burial will be in the Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 12-01/1976 Column - 7 Page - 2   

 

CARL S. BOWER (5 JULY 1909 - 18 MAY 1997)

 

Carl S. Bower, 87, of Beaverton, died Sunday, May 18, 1997 at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Home, Gladwin after a short illness. Born July 5, 1909 in Gladwin County, he lived in Gladwin his whole life.

 

Carl had been employed by The Dow Chemical Company in Midland and was retired from there. He was a member of the Masons in Midland.

 

Surviving are three daughters, Virginia and husband Robin Bard, Bonnie and husband Clair Hammond and Betty Loar, all of Beaverton; one son, Donal and wife Joyce of Beaverton; one brother, Floyd of Thompsonville; one sister, Bessie Riley of Dade City, Fla; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

 

Arrangements were in charge of the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin. Burial will be in Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 5-21/1997 Column – 3 Page – 2.

   Donald C. Bower, 66, of Beaverton, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland following a short illness. Born Aug. 8, 1935 in Midland, he was the son of Carl and Alice (Fritz) Bower. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Donald married Joyce (Sian), Dec. 19, 1953 in Sanford. He worked as an engineer for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, retiring in 1987 after 20 years. He was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655.

   Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Steven and wife Susan Bower of Coleman; one daughter, Lori and husband Mark Doud of Beaverton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty and husband Harlan Kidder of Maine and Virginia and husband Robin Bard of Beaverton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Debra Myers; one sister, Bonnie Hammond; and one brother, Clair Hammond.

   Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at the Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pardee Cancer Fund. Hall Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Gladwin County Record dated 02-06/2002 Column - 4 Page - 2

Joyce E. Bower, Joyce E. Bower, 70, of Sanford, Michigan died Oct. 16, 2005 at home. She was born in Midland on March 3, 1935 to Clifford and Ina (Martin) Sian. She married Donal Bower in Sanford on Dec. 19, 1953; he passed away in 2002. Joyce was a homemaker and lived in Gladwin County 20 years, having previously resided in Midland. She was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Club #3655.

 

Surviving her are her daughter, Lori (Mark) Doud of Beaverton; her son, Steven Bower of Coleman; six grandchildren and eight Great grandchildren; and four sisters, Delores, Wilma, Lynn and Lillian. She is predeceased by her husband, parents, and daughter, Debra Myers.

 

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton with Pastor Brad Withrow officiating.

 

TONYA B. BREEDING (30 NOV 1969 - 30 OCT 2005)

 

Tonya B. Breeding, 35, of Beaverton passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Midland following a brief illness. She was born in Sault Saint Marie on Nov. 30, 1969 to David and JoAnn (Carter) Breeding. She grew up in California and Michigan and was a very outgoing person. She was a member of the Living Hope Assembly of God Church.

   She is survived by her mother, JoAnn Breeding of Beaverton; two brothers, Bryan and Bradley Breeding, both of Royal Oak; two sisters, Denise (Bob) Shears of Beaverton and Ahndrea (Mark) Eisenhauer of Livonia; her grandmother, Marion Carter of Clare; her caregivers, Jeanette and Butch; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, David, in December 2003.

   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Charles Sanders officiaiting. Burial will be at Arbutus Cemetery. Lodell Brewer, 68, of 2970 W. Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Sunday, June 1, at Clare Osteopathic Hospital, following an extended illness. Born in Decature, Ill., July 29, 1906, he had been a resident of Gladwin County for 38 years, coming here from Ann Arbor. Mr. Brewer and the former Lorn Roach were married October 1, 1925, in Ann Arbor.

Surviving are his wife, Lorna; 2 sons, William of Beaverton and Larry of Mesa, Ariz.; 7 daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Betty) Adcock, Mrs. Gerald (Marion) Hines and Mrs. Paul (Marguerite) Markell, all of Pontiac, Mrs. Eugene (Doris) Schulz of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Richard (Catherine) Goodel of Midland, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Garvele of Gladwin and Mrs. John (Darlene) Stinger of Beaverton; 5 brothers, F. O. Brewer of Beaverton, Rollie and Ivo, both of Ann Arbor, Clarence of Whitmore Lake, and Alton of Glennie; 3 sisters, Mrs. Ernest Seyfried and Mrs. Berniece Wilson, both of Ann Arbor, and Mrs. Wayne Mortenson of Big Rapids; 29 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home -Gladwin Chapel with the Rev. Arthur Whisler officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery, Gladwin County.

 

LORNA ALETHA (ROACH) BREWER (2 AUG 1908 – 15 NOV 1979)

 

Lorna A. Brewer, 71, of 2970 W. Howard Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Clare Osteopathic Hospital. Born in Kingston on August 2, 1908, she came to Gladwin County in 1937, from Ann Arbor. The former Lorna Roach, she was married to Lodell Brewer on October 1, 1925, in Ann Arbor. He preceded her in death on June 2, 1975.

 

Surviving are 2 sons, William of Beaverton and Larry of Mesa, Ariz.; 6 daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Betty) Adcock and Mrs. (Marguerite) Markell of Pontiac, Mrs. Marion Hines of Chesaning, Mrs. Richard (Catherine) Goodell of Midland, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Gravelle of Gladwin and Mrs. John (Darlene) Stenger of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Leland of Lapeer and Kenneth of Pontiac; 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

WILLIAM M. BREWER (3 APRIL 1926 - 25 AUG 1985)

 

William M. Brewer, 59, of 3536 Calhoun Rd., Beaverton, died Sunday, Aug. 25, in the Midland Hospital Center after a short illness. Born in Ann Arbor April 3, 1926, he came to Gladwin County in 1937. Mr. Brewer was a carpenter and a veteran of World War II. He was married to the former Sylvia Wendt Dec. 12, 1982, in Gladwin.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 step-sons, Roger Roberson of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Roberson of Hope and Brent Roberson of Midland; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Tom (Vicki) Ziemer of Beaverton and Mrs. Greg (Brenda) Scott of Roseville; one brother, Larry of Mesa, Ariz.; 7 sisters, Mrs. Betty Adcock of Clarkston, Mrs. Doris Schultz of Mesa, Ariz., Mrs. Marion Hines of Chesaning, Mrs. Marguerite Markell of Pontiac, Mrs. Catherine Goodell of Midland, Mrs. Joyce Gravelle of Gladwin and Mrs. Darlene Stinger of Beaverton; ad 6 grandchildren.


Services were held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Arthur Whisler officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 8-28/1985 Column – 4 Page – 2.

ROSA M. (HACKETT) BURKE (12 JAN 1860 – 15 OCT 1924)

 

MRS. ISAAC A. BURKE

 

Rosa M., wife of Isaac A. Burke, died Oct. 15, 1924, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clara Gruehl, at Ogden, Lenawee county, aged 64 years, 9 months and 3 days, of acute indigestion, after a week’s illness. Rosa M. Hackett was born Jan. 12, 1860, at Penfield, Calhoun county, and was the daughter of George W. and Louisa M. Hackett. She was married in 1876 to Isaac A. Burke at Bellevue, Eaton county. They moved to Gladwin county in 1892, and lived here 30 years, until two years ago, when they remained a year, then returned to Michigan and have since made their home with their daughter at Ogden. To them nine children were born, only three of whom survive, Mrs. Clara Gruehl of Odgen, Fred Burke of Detroit, and John A. Burke of Bellevue, with the husband.

 

Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at Ogden. The body was brought to Gladwin Thursday, and taken to Arbutus cemetery for burial Friday, accompanied by Mr. Burke and Mrs. Gruehl of Ogden, John Burke of Bellevue and Mr. and Mrs. Herb Furgeson of Tecumseh.

 

Mrs. Burke was a faithful member of the Free Methodist church. During her residence in Gladwin county she gained a large circle of friends, who will regret to hear of her death. Gladwin County Record dated 10-23/1924 Column – 3 Page – 4.

CULLIE C. CARPER (20 OCT 1942 - 14 SEP 2005)

Cullie C. Carper, Cullie C. Carper, 62, of Gladwin, died Sept. 14, 2005 at home following a short illness. He was born in Gladwin on Oct. 20, 1942 to Cullie and Beatrice (Cooper) Carper. He married Barbara Cooper in Gladwin on March 31, 1979. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He worked at Chrysler in Detroit and served in the Navy.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Carper of Gladwin; five daughters, Nanette (Ahmad) Ramah of Hazel Park, Sarah (Chris) Reinke of Gladwin, Wendy Wheeler of Detroit, Daphne (John) Horvat of Westland, and Peggy (David) Alvey of Warren; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Garland Carper and Herbert Carper, both of Gladwin; and two sisters, Gloria Doane of Harrison and Delores Cleveland of Clare. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, William Carper and James Carper.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 17 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with Pastor Brad Withrow officiating. Burial followed at Arbutus Cemetery in Gladwin.

WILLIAM ROGER CARPER (14 AUG 1936 - 1 AUG 2002)

William Roger Carper , 65, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away Aug. 1, 2002 at University Hospital in Ann Arbor. William was born Aug. 14, 1936 to Cullie and Beatrice (Adkins) Carper in Charleston, West Virginia. He married the former Nancy Crawford on July 22, 1957 in Miami, West Virginia, and had lived in Gladwin County for 47 years. William was a self-employed truck driver, who hauled sand and gravel, and he was a member of Assembly of God Church in Gladwin.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Carper of Gladwin; sisters, Iris Cleveland of Clare and Gloria Doane of Harrison; brothers, Garland Carper, James Carper, Herbert Carper and Cullie Carper, all of Gladwin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services and visitation were held Monday, Aug. 5 at Assembly of God Church in Gladwin with Pastor Brad Withrow officiating. Burial took place in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton.

JOHN CHERRY (1842 - 7 AUG 1907)

 

   CHERRY---John Cherry died at Highwood Aug. 7, aged 65 years. He was born in Canada. He had been a resident of Michigan many years and had lived in Highwood two years. His wife survives, living in Jackson, and a son, Henry, lives at Highwood. Funeral today. Gladwin County Record dated 08-08/1907 Column - 2 Page - 5  

THOMAS C. COASH (18 SEP 1931 - 18 MAY 2004)

 

   Thomas C. Coash, Thomas C. Coash, 72, of Beaverton, died May 18, 2004, at  home. He was born September 18, 1931, to Clinton and Mary (Connelly) Coash in Saginaw. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked as a supervisor at General Motors in Saginaw. Previously of Saginaw, he lived in Gladwin for the past 25 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 1859 in Carrollton, the National  Rifle Association, and the Michigan Sheriff Association. He  was also a Boy Scout leader for Troop 325 in Saginaw.

   He is survived by three sisters, Margaret and Jim Ford of  Rockford, Mary and Les Meehleder of Rockford, and Theresa Slagle of Midland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Special thanks to the Mercer family and his extended family and friends.

   Funeral services were held Friday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with Rev. James Hoggard officiating. Burial was at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Barbara Jo Cox, 53, of Gladwin, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at home. Born Sept. 24, 1947 in Saginaw, she was the daughter of Clarence and Geraldine (Kent) West. She lived in Gladwin County 25 years and previously lived in Bridgeport. Barbara married James Cox, April 30, 1966 in Saginaw. She worked in housekeeping for MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. She was a member of the Church of Daniels Band-Highwood and loved the great outdoors.

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Lynn and husband Charles Kile of Curtis, and Tamara Jo and husband Robert Lough of Midland; grandchildren, Tamara Jo and Robert Lough of Midland, Charles Jr. and Thomas Kile, Ryan, Nick, Tawny, Chase, and Hannah Jo Lough; one sister, Jacqueline and husband Jeffrey Wood of Saginaw; one brother, Darwin and wife Crystal Mederies of Bridgeport; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

   Victor H. Crook , age 77, died June 24, 2002 at his home in Beaverton, Michigan. He was born May 13, 1925 to Herbert and Hazel (Kipp) Crook in Hazel Park, Michigan. On July 10, 1979 he married Mary Atherton at Beaverton. Victor was Maintenance Technician for the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, retiring in 1963. He then worked as a heavy equipment operator for Grandsden in Edenville, Michigan, retiring in 1987. He had been a resident of Gladwin County since 1963, having previously lived in Norfolk, Virginia.

He was a member of the Church of Daniel’s Band, the Fleet Reserve #358, Skidway Lake, and Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655.

   He is survived by his wife, Mary Crook; his son Alan (Gemey) Crook of Hawaii; his step children, Cindy (Tony) Peacock of Beaverton, Dennis (Sheryl) Doan of Gladwin, John (Trisa) Doan of Beaverton, and William (Marion) Doan of Tawas; thirteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brothers, Rev. Norris Crook of Lehigh Acres, Florida, and Frank Crook of Lakeworth, Florida; his sisters, Rachel Conner of Willard, Ohio, and Virginia Pietryzk of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, two step-children, and two grandchildren.

   Funeral services were held Friday, June 28, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin, Michigan, with Rev. Jim Hoggard officiating. Burial took place at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton.    Mrs. Bertha Z. Currie, 62, died suddenly at her home in Hay Township, on Tuesday, March 22. The former Miss Bertha Cone, was born July 11, 1897, in Monroe County and married Earl F. Currie November 12, 1912. She had been a resident of Gladwin County for 50 years. Survivors include her husband, Earl; three sons, George R. of Detroit, Frank E. and Harris L. of Beaverton; five daughters, Mrs. Edith V. Hyer, of Auburn, Mrs. Beatrice L.    Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home for Earl F. Currie, 84, of Gladwin Township, who died Saturday, Nov. 6, after an illness of one week. Born in Yale on March 1, 1881, he had lived in Gladwin County for 70 years. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Currie was a member of the Gladwin I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 177. He was married to the former Bertha Cone in Bay County on Nov. 12, 1912. She preceded him in death on March 22, 1960.

   Surviving are three sons, Frank E., of Estey, Harris L., of Gladwin, and George R., of Detroit; five daughters, Mrs. Edith Hyer, Auburn, Mrs. Marie Parkin, Detroit; Mrs. Beatrice Mackie, of Phoniex, Ariz., Mrs. Addie C. ILLNESS FATAL TO JAMES F. DAGLEY

 

James F. Dagley, 66, of Buckeye township, died Thursday, April 22, at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mr. Dagley had been in ill health for several months.

 

Mr. Dagley was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 13, 1877, and lived in Flint prior to coming to Buckeye township to make his home. For many years he has been correspondent for The Record for the southwest Buckeye area.

Funeral services were held at the Hall Funeral Home here Sunday, April 25, with the Rev. R. H. Nicodemus officiating. Burial was in the Arbutus cemetery.

FLORENCE M. (BRINKLEY) DAILEY (17 DEC 1932 - 5 OCT 2000)

 

Florence M. Dailey, 67, of Beaverton, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Saginaw following a long illness.

Florence was born December 17, 1932 to Edward and Helen Brinkey in Hazel Park, Michigan. She had lived in Gladwin County since 1974 and lived previously in Troy, Michigan. She married Edward Dailey Aug. 20, 1953 in Rochester. She spent her life as a homemaker.

 

She is survived by her husband Edward of Beaverton; four sons, Gary and wife, Linda Dailey of Madison Heights, Gerald Dailey of Gladwin, James and wife, Lois Dailey of Coleman, and Michael and wife Andrea Dailey of Farwell; a daughter, Ginny and husband, Mark of Beaverton; three brothers, Clarence Brinkey of Utica, James Brinkey of Drayton Plains and William Brinkey of Miami, Fla.; one sister, Eleanor Werth of Caro; and 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and her parents.

 

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 9 at the Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton with Paul Kile and Donn Pendelton officiating. She was buried in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Memorial contributions will be used according to the wishes of the family.

Ernest E. Damon, 84, 1302 Howard, Beaverton, died Feb. 16, 1984, at the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long illness.

 

He was born June 30, 1899, in New Hampshire and was a butcher in the Detroit area until his retirement in 1972. He married Nora Cutter Aug. 15, 1935, in Stoneham, Mass., and moved to Gladwin in 1972.

 

Besides his wife he leaves sons Kenneth Damon of Sterling Heights and Lawrence Damon of Bedford, N.H.; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A daughter, Joyce Skurya, died April 28, 1973.

 

Funeral services were 1 p.m. today at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Beaverton, with Rev. Mark Moore officiating. Burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery.

 

NORA E. (CUTTER) DAMON (29 JAN 1911 - 16 JAN 1997)

 

Nora E. Damon, 85, of Beaverton, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997 in Gladwin after a long illness. Born Jan. 29, 1911 in Bangor, Maine, she married Ernest E. Damon Aug. 15, 1935 in Stoneham, Mass. He preceded her in death Feb. 16, 1984.

 

She had been employed by TRW of Troy, retiring in 1972 after 30 years. She lived in Gladwin County since 1972, previously living in Detroit.

 

Surviving are one son, Kenneth and wife Dolores of Sterling Heights; four brothers, Robert and Donald Cutter of Florida, Howard Cutter of Michigan and Bob Cutter of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Skurya, April 28, 1973.

 

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin chapel with the Rev. Deane B. Wyllys officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery, Beaverton. Esther T. Dawley , 84, of Midland, Michigan passed away Sept. 27, 2003 at MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland following a long illness.

She was born May 21, 1919 to Charles and Susie (Kasler) Lehman in Logan, Ohio. Esther married Ivan Dawley Sr. on Nov. 2, 1935 in Logan, Ohio; he preceded her death in 1998. Esther was a homemaker and moved to Gladwin County in 1970 from Ohio.

 

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley L. (Donald) Needham of Breckenridge and Pauline E. (Robert) White-Manifold of Gladwin; three sons, Chuck W. (Nancy) Dawley of Hemlock, Ivan (Anell) Dawley Jr. of Gladwin, and Orval L. (Ann) Dawley of Greenbush; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Pat Dawley, in 1996, as well as several brothers and sisters.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 1) at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Jeff Hickman officiating. Burial will take place in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Ivan W. Dawley, 79, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998 at Gladwin Pines Nursing Home in Gladwin after a long illness. Born July 19, 1918 in Hocking County, Ohio, he lived in Gladwin County since 1970 and previously lived in Ohio. Ivan married the former Esther Lehman, Nov. 2, 1935 in Logan, Ohio. He was retired as a pumper for Sun Oil Company. Ivan was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a life member of D.A.V., Inland Lakes, Michigan Post 39.

   Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Shirley L. and husband Donald Needham of Breckenridge, and Pauline E. and husband Marvin White of Beaverton; three sons, Charles W. and wife Nancy of Hemlock, Ivan Jr. and wife Anell of Gladwin, and Orville L. and wife Ann of Greenbush; one sister, Forrest Mae Matheny of Gladwin; 18 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Pat, Jan. 30, 1996.;

Mr. Doane and the former Marie Foor were married June 30, 1938, in Gladwin County.

Mrs. Laura Dodd, 72, died at her home in Gladwin following an illness of several months. She was born in Henry County, Ohio on July 26, 1884 and had lived in Gladwin County since 1907. Mrs. Dodd was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. On April 27, 1951, she was married to Raymond Dodd in Midland.

 

Surviving are her husband; one son, Laurence Measel of Gladwin County; three daughters, Mrs. Nellie McColley of Gladwin, Mrs. Mildred Hund of Beaverton and Mrs. Arvilda Parkins of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Tillie Mitchell of Hamler, Ohio, Miss Bertha Fox and Miss Nellie Fox of Toledo; and 12 grandchildren. Four daughters and one son preceded her in death.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gladwin Free Methodist Church with the Rev. F. E. Voller officiating. Burial was in the Arbutus cemetery. Ervin F. Dombrowski, 59, of 1390 Colony Square, Gladwin, died suddenly Tuesday, March 3, 1992, in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center, Gladwin. Born in Hamtramck, Dec. 14, 1931, he came to Gladwin 2 years ago from Detroit. Mr. Dombrowski was a carpet installer in the Detroit area until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Cedar River Chapel, Beaverton. Mr. Dombrowski and the former Agnes Shaw were married March 3, 1978, in Harper Woods.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 sons, David of Royal Oark, Dennis of Oak Park, Dale of Detroit and Ed of Beaverton; 2 daughters, Mrs. Thor (Rynee) Stenson of Marquette and Mrs. Bob (Colleen) Kidd of Warren; 2 step-sons, Robert and David Balgenworth of Detroit; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Sharon Lanzetta of Redford Township and Mrs. Lynn Evans of Arlington, Va.; his mother, Mrs. Clara Bogucki of Detroit; 2 sisters, Mrs. Virginia Srodka of Murfreesboro, Ten. Url F. Farmer, 62, of 2581 W. M-61, Gladwin, died Sunday, May 27, 1990, in the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center after a long illness with cancer. Born in Romero, Sept. 13, 1927, he moved to Gladwin County in 1970. Mr. Farmer was a machinist for Kal Plastics in Beaverton. Mr. Farmer and the former Marilyn Matteson were married Oct. 9, 1961, in Rochester.

Jennie H. Fasching, 93, of Gladwin, died Monday, June 28, 1999 at the Gladiwn Living Centre in Gladwin after a short illness. Born Jan. 26, 1906 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she lived in Gladwin County since 1962 and previously lived in Detroit. Jennie married Joseph Fasching, July 31, 1928 in Wyoming, Pa. He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker.

 

Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Robert. Gravesides services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton with Rev. Joseph Fasching, 84, of 946 W. Winegar Rd., Gladwin, died Monday, Nov. 5, in the Midland Hospital Center after a long illness. Born in Swoyersville, Pa., March 17, 1904, he moved to Gladwin County about 20 years ago from Detroit. Mr. Fasching was a tool and die maker with American Motors in Detroit and retired in 1966. Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary Wyatt of Livonia. He was preceded in death by 2  brothers, William and Anton and 2 sisters, Helen Davis and Sophia Phillips.

Edith Grace Foster, 86, of 1090 Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, Jan. 19, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long illness. Born in Canadaigua, N.Y., on November 16, 1892, she moved to Lake Geneva, Wisc., in 1913 and to Detroit in 1916. Miss Foster lived in Detroit until 1958 when she came to Gladwin County to care for her sister, the late Florence Fromer. She had been a resident of the Gladwin Nursing Home since 1974.

   Miss Foster was a member of the Hope Gospel Church of Detroit and was a commercial artist with Children's Aid Society. Surviving are 46 neices and nephews. Rites were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Winston Decker officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery.    Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Jennie Vail, of Gladwin; three sisters, Grace Foutch of Gladwin, Mrs. Inez Wiechec and Mrs. Minne Malloy, both of Chicago; two brothers, Oscar and Lawrence of Flint.

   Mrs. Bertha B. Fritz, 71, of Hay Township, died Monday following an illness of three weeks. She was born April 30, 1888 in Harbor Beach. The former Miss Bertha B. Ingles was married to Clarence M. Fritz, on December 23, 1905 in Standish. A Gladwin County resident for 54 years, she was a member of the Free Methodist Church, Gladwin.

   Survivors include her husband, Clarence M.; a daughter, Mrs. Peter Gee, of Beaverton; a son, C. Gordon Fritz, of Midland; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Nolan Fritz, of Atlanta, and Mrs. Louis Kalmbaugh, of Midland. A son, Orley, preceded her in death in 1935.

CLARENCE FRITZ DIES IN FLORIDA

 

   Clarence M. Fritz, 83, of Hay Township, died Friday in Orlando, Fla., following an illness of two weeks. Born in Vestaburg on Nov. 18, 1883, he had resided in Gladwin County for the past 65 years. Mr. Fritz was a retired Dow worker and janitor at the Winegars school. He was married to the former Bertha Ingles on Dec. 23, 1905, in Standish. She preceded him in death on May 18, 1959.

   Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Peter Gee of Beaverton; one son, C. Gordon of Midland; two brothers, Len of Deatroit and Nolan of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Services were held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. from the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Allen and F. E. Voller officiated, with burial in the Arbutus Cemetery.    Orla Monroe Fritz died April 16, 1935, at his home at Highwood after an illness of a year and a half. Services will be held Friday afternoon, April 19, 1935, at 2:30 at the Highwood Free Methodist church, conducted by Rev. W. J. Johnson. Fritz was born June 3, 1907, at Alger, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fritz, to Highwood in 1908. He married Miss Lena Lefner July 20, 1927.

Rick Fritz, 20, of 2398 Long Rd., Beaverton, died Thursday, July 20, in Bay City. Born in Gladwin on May 8, 1958, he attended Gladwin, Beaverton and Bay City schools. He served in the U.S. Army in 1976.

   Surviving are his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Orley Fritz of Midland; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Levere Doan of Beaverton; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snyder of Germfask and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bennett of Evart; 2 half-brothers, Orley and Tony Fritz of Bay City; a half-sister, Dianna Doan of Beaverton, Gordon, Charles and Michael Fritz of Midland; and 2 step-sisters, Mrs. Lon (Fonda) Ricky of Gladwin and Lori Doan of Beaverton.

Mrs. Florence Fromer, 73, of Beaverton, died Thursday at the Gladwin Nursing Home after a long illness. Born May 20, 1887, at Canadaigua, N.Y., the former Florence Foster was married to George H. Fromer at Binghampton, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 1913. They came to Gladwin County from Detroit six years ago. Mrs. Fromer was a member of Holy Gospel Church, Detroit, the Billings Sunday School, and attended the Gladwin Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband, George H.; six sons, George of East Lansing, Donald of Beaverton, Richard of Toledo, Ohio, Dick, James and Lawrence, at home; three daughters, Margaret, Dorothy and Lillian, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Cosman of Mohawk, N.Y., and Miss Edith Foster of Detroit; nine grandchildren and thre great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Gladwin Baptist Church, with the Rev. Henry C. Hall officiating. Burial was in Arbutus cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 1-18/1961 Column - 6 Page - 1.

George H. Fromer, 84, of 1087 Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, Dec. 29, at the Gladwin Area Hospital. He was born in Hurley, So. Dak., Dec. 20, 1888, and attended Wyoming Seminary in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., graduating in 1909. Mr. Fromer and the former Florence Foster were married in Binghampton, N.Y., August 25 1913, and came to Detroit in 1916 where he was employed as a die sinker at Ford Motor Co. Prior to that he had farmed at Lake Geneva, Wisc., for a time. He retired in 1954 and they moved to Beaverton. Mr. Fromer was a lay preacher and member of Hope Gospel Church in Detroit and lay preacher and Sunday school teacher at the Billings Sunday School in Billings Township. Mrs. Fromer died Jan. 12, 1961.

 

Surviving are six sons, George H. Jr. of Brazil, Richard of Ann Arbor, Donald of Beaverton, James of Gladwin, Lawrence of Mt. Morris, and Dick of Riverdale, Ill.; three daughters, Miss Margaret Fromer of Brazil, Mrs. Philip (Dorothy) Rabine of Manhattan, Mont., and Mrs. Clifford (Lillian) Summerhill of Battle Creek; two sisters; 22 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Margaret Fromer, 69, of Beaverton, died Monday, Dec. 19, 1983, in Clare Nursing Home. 

She was born June 29, 1914, in Lake Geneva, Wis. Miss Fromer was a missionary serving Gladwin and Ogemaw counties for many years, and in 1966 served as a missionary in Brazil with the Brazil Independent Mission. She was a member of the Beaverton Baptist Church.

 

She leaves brothers, George Fromer Jr. of Sun City, Ariz., Donald Fromer of Beaverton, Richard Fromer and James Fromer both of Gladwin, Dick Fromer of Chicago and Larry Fromer of Saginaw; and sister, Lillian Summerhill of Battle Creek. A sister, Dorothy Fromer, died Sept. 23, 1981.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Beaverton Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Wright officiating. Burial will be in Arbutus Cemetery in Buckeye Township.  Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel, after 6 p.m. today and until noon Thursday.

 

RICHARD FROMER (8 FEB 1923 - 8 DEC 1998)

 

Richard Fromer, 75, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin. Born Feb. 8, 1923 in Detroit, he was the son of George and Florence Foster Fromer. Richard came to Gladwin in 1981 from the Detroit area.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Lillian and husband Clifford Summerhill of Battle Creek, and Dianne and husband Wayne Dilts of Wichita, Kan.; four sons, James and wife Carolyn of Gladwin, Lawrence and wife Linda of Burk, Mark and wife Candy of Belville, and Richard and wife Ruth of South Holland, Ill.; one brother, Donald of Albuquerque, N. M.; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by two sisters, and one brother. Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Rev. Robert Brown officiating.

Gilbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fyan of Highwood, died Saturday night from effects of burns received during the day while in a field which was being cleared and burned. He was playing with his brother when his clothes caught fire, with results stated. The boy was aged three years six months and 20 days. Interment took place at Arbutus. George E. Garren, 74, of 2516 S. Long Rd., Beaverton, died Thursday, Aug. 3, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long illness. Born in Huthouse, Ga., on October 2, 1903, he came to Gladwin County three years ago from Detroit. He was a retired sprayer for Briggs Manufacturing Co. in Detroit. Mr. Garren was married to the former Lola Jones on April 13, 1930, in Blue Ridge, Ga.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Inex of Beaverton; one sister, Mrs. Cora Pritchett of Calhoun, Ga.; and 2 granddaughters, A son, Jay, preceded him in death in May and a brother, Loftus, followed him in death.

Irene Gennette, 80, of Beaverton, died Sept. 6, 2003, at home in Beaverton following a long illness. She was born Oct. 19, 1922, to Ross and Cora (Dorland) Shelman in Detroit. A homemaker, she moved to Gladwin County in 1977 from Farmington Hills. She married Tony Gennette Aug. 14, 1937 in Brightmore, Mich. He predeceased her in 1997. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Gladwin Eagles Aerie 3292.

Surviving are a daughter, Vickey Reynolds of Beaverton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ross and Cindy Gennette of Plymouth, Larry and Cheri Gennette of Livonia, and Daniel and Tina Gennette of Gladwin; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Schriber of Beaverton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, as well as her husband.

Funeral Services were Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gladwin with Rev. Patrick Jankowiak officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Tony Gennette, 81, of Beaverton, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Midland, after a short illness. Born Nov. 14, 1915 in Detroit, he had been employed by Zimmer Man Manufacturing of Redford, retiring in 1977. Tony married the former Irene Sheiman, Aug. 14, 1937 in Brightmore. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Vickey and husband Gordon Reynolds of Beaverton; three sons, Ross and wife Cindy of Plymouth, Larry and wife Cheri of Livonia, and Danial and wife Tina of Gladwin; three brothers, Frank, Rocky and Bill; one sister, Margie Skaggs; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Golda B. George, 96, of Gladwin, died Sunday, May 18, 1997 after a short illness at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Home, Gladwin. Born April 6, 1901 in Clio, she was a homemaker and a member of the Wooden Shoe United Methodist Church. The former Golda Wetherald married Edwin George in 1922 in Flint.

 

Surviving are two sons, Robert and wife Barbara of Columbiaville and Edwin and wife Gail of Escondido, Calif.; two daughter-in-laws, Betty George of Gladwin and Joan George of Northville; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and three sisters.

LLOYD GEORGE

 

Lloyd E. George, 53, of 2355 West M-61, Gladwin, died Friday, Sept. 29, in the Clare Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Flint on May 11, 1925, he was a cement mason for the City of Flint. Mr. George moved to Gladwin County in 1964. He graduated from the School for the Blind in Lansing in 1945 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Flint.

Mr. George and the former Betty Williams were married on June 26, 1948, in Flint. Surviving, besides his wife, are one son, David George; 2 daughters, Dawn of Big Rapids and Mrs. Kip (D'Anne) Fritcher of Gladwin; his mother, Mrs. Golda George of Gladwin; 3 brothers, Arthur of New Boston, Edwin of Detroit and Robert of Columbiaville; and 2 grandchildren. Seriveces were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Bates officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery.

 

MARK S. GRANT (27 JULY 1959 - 14 APRIL 2005)

 

God called on of his best fisherman home to the holy waters. Mark Grant of Beaverton passed away on April 14, 2005 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born July 27, 1959 in Clare to Bert and Jessie (Whalen) Grant. Owner and operator of Mark Grant Builder, he is a lifetime resident of Gladwin County and a member of the Community of Christ Church in Beaverton. Mark married Virginia "Ginny" (Dailey) Grant of Beaverton on June 13, 1981. She survives him, along with their daughters, Michelle "Smell" Grant (Matt Colvin) of Gladwin, and Melissa "Goog" Grant of Beaverton (Tyler Molesworth, Gladwin).

   Between camping, hitching and unhitching horse trailers, fixing tack, and throwing hay for the girls and their horses, Mark was an avid fly fisherman, catching trout, bass and bluegill whenever he had the chance. Dozens of trails leading to Gladwin County lakes and rivers will forever bear the image of his footprint.

   Mark is also survived by his parents; brothers, Dave Grant of Beaverton, Mike (Cindy) Grant of Colorado, Scott (Colleen) Grant of Beaverton, Gordon (Karlina) Grant of Midland, Douglas (Christina) Grant of Tennessee; father-in-law Edward Dailey of Beaverton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Florence Dailey.

   Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on April 16, 2005 at Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton. Elder Thomas Rodabaugh officiated. Mark will be buried at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. DOUGLAS H. GRAVELLE (17 OCT 1923 – 13 JUL 1986

 

Douglas H. Gravele, 62, of Nashville, Mich., died Sunday, July 13, 1986, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Bad Axe. He was the owner/operator of Gravelle’s Meat Market in Nashville, where he had been a resident since February of 1978. Prior to that he lived in Gladwin County. He married the former Shirley Ruthig, Nov. 28, 1946, in Ulby.

 

He leaves his wife; sons Donald Gravelle of Saginaw and Richard Gravelle of Gladwin; daughters Lavila Edick and Lonalee Smith, both of Gladwin; five grandchildren; his mother Edith Gravelle of Bad Axe; and a sister, Marykee Romaker of Lowell.

Shirley J. Gravelle, 73, of Midland, died Friday Jan. 16, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a long illness. Born in Ulby, she was a self-employed as a beautician and lived in Gladwin County since 1961, in Midland for the past few years, and previously lived in Bad Axe. Shirley married Douglas Gravelle, Nov. 28, 1946 in Ubly. He preceded her in death July 13, 1986.

 

Surviving are two sons, Richard and wife Joyce of Gladwin and Donald and wife Sharon of Saginaw; two daughters, Lavila and husband Tim Edick of Gladwin, and Lonalee and husband Randy Maier of Midland; two brothers, Alger Ruthig of Gladwin and Douglas Ruthig of Sunberry, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Larry D. Greaves, 51, of Beaverton, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998 in Gladwin after a short illness. Born Sept. 30, 1946 in Gladwin, he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He worked as a laborer for Fisher Contractors in Midland.

Bonnie B. Hammond, 69, of Beaverton, died Friday, March 23, 2001. She lived in Gladwin County most of her life. Born Sept. 23, 1931 in Midland, she was the daughter of Carl and Alice Bower. Bonnie married Clair C. Hammond, June 3, 1948 in St. Louis. He preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1999. She was a clerk for Agins Dime Store until 1985 and then a clerk for Beaverton Pharmacy. She enjoyed bowling, camping, and crafts.

Surviving are one son, James C. and wife Denise of Beaverton; one daughter, Terry and husband John Noyes of Beaverton; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Don Bower of Beaverton; and two sisters, Virginia Bard of Beaverton and Betty Kidder of Maine. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar River Chapel, Beaverton with Pastor Paul Kile officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. CLAIR C. HAMMOND (14 JUNE 1924 - 19 AUG 1999)

 

Clair C. Hammond, 75, of Beaverton, died Aug. 19, 1999 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw following a long illness. Clair was born June 14, 1924 in Grand Bay, Alabama. He was an automobile mechanic and retired in 1986 from Presido Ford/Mercury and Beaverton Ford/Mercury. He was a veteran of WWII serving for the U.S. Navy. He lived in Gladwin County most of his life and was an avid bowler, fisherman and golfer. Clair was married June 3, 1948 in St. Louis, Michigan to Bonnie Bower.

   He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Beaverton; one son, Jim and wife, Denise Hammond of Beaverton; one daughter, Terry and husband John Noyes of Beaverton; five brothers, Robert of Beaverton, Kenneth of Bowie, Tex. William of Grand Bay, Alabama, Frederick of Midland, and Glen of Pontiac; five sisters, Betty Sessions of Grand Bay, Alabama, Shirley Savage fo Pascagoula, Mississippi, Nellie Lyons of New August, Mississippi, Etta Scarborough of Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Mable Knight of Beaverton; and six grandchildren.

   Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Paul Kile officiating. He was buried in the Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Edward A. Harlow, 78, of 2096 Hockaday Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday, May 7, at his home. Born in Randolph, Vt., on April 20, 1905, he came to Gladwin County in 1956. He was a veteran of World War II and self-employed in various fields. He was married to Frances Little in 1929 and she died in 1956.

   Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Rosetta Bartlett of Rutland, Vt.; and close friend Stanley Lutes with whom he made his home. Services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev.Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery. Graveside services were held by the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303. LAWRENCE CARL HAVENS (11 JULY 1899 - 5 FEB 1918)

 

   Havens---Lawrence Carl Havens was born on a farm at Northwest, Williams county, O., July 11, 1899, and died at Camp Merritt, N.J., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1918, at 6 a.m., aged 18 years, 6 months and 25 days. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Newman D. Havens and came with his parents to Beaverton in October, 1907, and afterward settled in Buckeye township. At the age of 12 years he injured a limb and was in the Saginaw General hospital 22 weeks for treatment.

   On his eighteenth birthday he enlisted at Pontiac where he was employed, and was sent to Ft. Brady for training where he remained two months when he was transferred to Waco, Texas. About three weeks ago he and his brother were again transferred to Camp Merritt, N.J., 17 miles from New York where they were awaiting orders to sail for France. Here he contracted measels and pneumonia and lived only nine days.

   He was a member of the Ancient Order of Gleaners and belonged to the Highwood arbor. He was not a church member but of the Advent belief, a good worker in Sunday school and always ready to do his part wherever duty presented itself. His friendly smile and kind greetings will be missed by all who knew him.

   He is mourned by his parents, five brothers and two sisters, Mrs. John Maxwell of Hope, Ray who enlisted with him and has been with him since, Byrl, Marion, Clair, Ruth and Truman at home, an two grandmothers, Mrs. Julia Hand of Williams county, Ohio, and Mrs. Weatherwax of Ray, Ind., besides other relatives and hosts of friends who came to pay tribute at the last rites held at the Arbutus school. Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Nolan of Edenville followed by interment in Arbutus cemetery.

   Helen Marie (Dicken) Hopkins passed away Jan. 10, 2004 peacefully at the age of 78. She was born March 11, 1925 at  the home of her grandparents Emma and Abraham Brubaker. Her proud parents were Leah and Earl Dicken of Beaverton. Helen was married in May of 1943 to Rexford P. Cox until his death on June 17, 1981. She also married Roland Giesenhaver in May of 1985, he passed away May 10, 1988. In April of 1996 she married Orland “Mike” Hopkins who also preceded her in death July 12, 2003. Helen’s hobbies were gardening, growing flowers, wild life, square dancing and enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

   Helen and Rexford have four children, daughters, Connie (Sam) Mercer of Beaverton, Judy (Donald) Davis of Beaverton; son James Cox of Gladwin, Brian Cox of St. Clair Shores; step son Michael (Gloria) Hopkins of Sanford; two grandsons, Troy and Michael Mercer; five granddaughters, Robyn Thume, Amanda Paisley, Heidi Skym, Rebecca Kile, and Tamara Lough; 14 great grandchildren and brother Francis Dicken of Gladwin. In addition to her husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her Parents and brothers, Walter Stroman, Charles Dicken, Clarence “Bud” Dicken, and Thomas Dicken.

   Funeral services will be held Jan. 14, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at  Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. James Hoggard officiating. A burial will be in Arbutus Cemetery, Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Daniels Band, Highwood.

John George Horvath, 83, of Buckeye Township, died Sunday, April 27, in the Gladwin Hospital after an illness of four months. Born in Hungary on Dec. 20, 1885, he came to Gladwin County 39 years ago from Cleveland, Ohio, and farmed.

Helen B. Hunt, 76, of 263 Hendry St., Gladwin, died Sunday, July 25, 1993, in the Saginaw General Hospital, Saginaw, after a short illness. Born in Alpena County, June 6, 1917, she moved to Gladwin County 15 years ago from Bay City and Howell. The former Helen Kosloski, she was married to Willard Hunt.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters, Shirley Colvin and Beverly Smart of Beaverton; 5 brothers, Arthur, William and Richard of Lansing and Frank and Carl of Florida; 3 sisters, Annie Steele of Lansing and Evelyn Patton and Elaine Taylor of Higgins Lake; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

Born in Tallahassee, Fla., on February 2, 1917, he came to Gladwin County 22 years ago from Detroit. Mr. Johnson was a bricklayer and a veteran of World War II. He was married to the former Margie E. Ross on December 8, 1937, in Detroit.

Willie R. (Pete) Lambdin, 66, of Gladwin, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 1994, in Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma. He was born in Sheridan, Ark., on May 30, 1927, and moved to Gladwin County in 1964. Mr. Lambdin and the former Lillie Harris were married Nov. 5, 1944, in Union City, Tenn.


Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Donald, David and Daniel of Gladwin; one brother, William of Birmingham; and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers.

Sammy D. Lamentola, 53, of Beaverton, Michigan died March 13, 2006 at Mesa General Hospital in Mesa, Arizona following a sudden illness. He was born in Bosier City, Louisiana on Sept. 4, 1952 to Durell and Helen (Conway) Lamentola. He married the former Teri Jean Rechtermann in Atlanta, Michigan on July 23, 2003. He served in the U.S. Marines, and was a corrections officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections in Standish. He lived in Gladwin County since 1993, having previously resided in St. Louis, Michigan.

 

Surviving him are wife, Teri, two sons, Christopher (Charity) Lamentola of St. Louis, Michinga and Timothy (Heather) Lamentola of Breckenridge; one daughter Monica Lamentola of Taylor; two step-children, Mandy (Billy) Hunsaker and Jacob Wayne Hunsaker, both of Mesa, Arizona; his grandchildren, Jessica (Sammy Jo), Kegan, David, Alex, Taylor, Madison and Audrey; four brothers, Ronny (Pam) Lamentola, Larry (Donna) Lamertola, Gary (Annette) Lamentola, and Danny Lamentola; one sister, Suzy (Dave) Gadigan; one brother, Jason (Nancy) Lamentola; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Judy.

John W. Marti II, 28, of Beaverton, died Monday, Jan. 23, 1984, in Gladwin Area Hospital following an accidental shooting.

 

He was born Dec. 4, 1955, in Saginaw.  He had been a resident of Gladwin for the past two years.  He leaves his daughter, Sara Ann Marti of Midland; father, John W. Marti of Beaverton; mother, Julia J. Marti of Saginaw; sisters, Jayne Thon and Jan Herzog, both of Saginaw.

 

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. Burial will be at Arbutus Cemetery near Gladwin.  Friends may call at the funeral anytime until time of service.

 

Beaverton man’s death accidental

 

A 28-year-old Gladwin County man died Monday in an accidental shooting death, the county’s coroner said today.

 

John W. Marti II, of Beaverton, was found dead inside a Gladwin County home, said Dr. James Sullivan, Gladwin County medical examiner. Marti was pronounced dead at the scene. The location of the death was not released. Marti apparently had been shot with a .410 shotgun, the coroner said. Gladwin County Record dated 01-25/1984 Column - 8 Page – 2.

   William F. Martin, 66, of Beaverton passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Clare. William was born the son of William and Louise (Seeley) Martin Jan. 31, 1935 in Pontiac. He married the former Kay White Feb. 5, 1976 in Clare. William had lived in Beaverton for 30 years. He worked as an electrician and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

   He is survived by his wife Kay; a son Jessie Martin of Beaverton; five daughters, Dawn Martin of Harrison, Tyi Alissandrini of Big Rapids, Zina Blackberry of Detroit, Kim Martin of Pontiac and Carrie Moody of Ohio; and 12 grandchildren.

Mrs. McLain was born in Berkley, Nov. 30, 1940, and moved to Gladwin County 5 years ago  from Detroit. She was a communications supervisor for Plymouth General Hospital in Detroit prior to coming to Gladwin County. She served as the Hay Township clerk and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Moose Lodge. The former Janice Voskuhl, she was married to Lanny McLain April 14, 1976 in Walled Lake.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Skillin of Detroit; a son, Robert Skillin of Redford; 2 sisters, Wanda Kay Gardella of Arizona, and Shirley Christenson of Southfield; a brother, Clyde Duane Miller of Buffalo, N. Y.; her father and step-mother, John and Edith Voskuhl of Beaverton; and one grandchild.

Funeral services are being held today at 2 p.m. for William A. Measell, 75, at the Highwood Free Methodist church. Rev. Henry Powell and Rev. Carl Koerner are in charge of the last rites and burial is at Arbutus cemetery.

 

A long time resident of Gladwin county, Mr. Measell moved here in 1909, from Holegate, Ohio. He resided in Hay township. After a chronic illness of several years, he died Sunday, July 29.

 

Born May 14, 1870, at Republic, Ohio, he was married to Laura Fox, February 14, 1907, at Holegate, Ohio. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Highwood Free Methodist church.

 

Surviving him are his wife Laura; three daughters, Mrs. Nellie McColley of Gladwin, Mrs. Mildred Friday of Bay City, and Mrs. Arvilla Parkins of Highland Park; one son, Laurence Measell of Flint; five grandchildren; two brothers, John Measell of Oakwood, Ohio, and Charles Measell of Homer, Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie McGranahan of McCome, Ohio, and Mrs. Nettie Gunn of Findlay, Ohio. Ida Mae Mercer, 87, of Gladwin, died Saturday, April 6, 1996 at the home of her daughter following a short illness.Born Aug. 9, 1908 in Sandusky, she resided in Gladwin since 1945 when she moved from Imlay City. Mrs. Mercer was a member of the Highwood Church of Daniels Band in Gladwin. The former Ida Mae Pettit married Josiah Mercer Jan. 2, 1925 in Sandusky. He preceded her in death Oct. 28, 1979.

 

Surviving are 2 sons, Charles and wife Floye of Apopka, Fla. and Roger Samuel and wife Connie of Beaverton; one daughter, Betty Mae Mercer of Gladwin; one brother, Everett Blakely of Detroit; one sister, Mary Ann Queen of Imlay City; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchidren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John Henry Mercer March 10, 1988; and a sister, Clara Belle Reeves.

John Henry Mercer, 54, of 415 E. Winegars Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, March 10, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Lapeer County Nov. 7, 1933, he moved to Gladwin County in 1945, from Imlay City. Mr. Mercer was employed by Continental Can in Midland as a painter for 31 years. Mr. Mercer and the former Patricia Claypool were married Dec. 7, 1968, in Midland.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 5 sons, Thomas, Tedd and Eric of Gladwin, Daniel of Beaverton and David of Rifle, Colo.; his mother, Mrs. Ida Mae Mercer of Gladwin; 2 brothers,Charles of Florida and Roger of Beaverton; one sister, Mrs. Betty Claypool of Greybull, Wyo.; and 9 grandchildren. Josiah Mercer, 79, of 300 Winegars Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, Oct. 28, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following an illness of two months. Born in Sanilac County on October 18, 1900, he came to Gladwin County in 1945 from Imlay City. He was a retired farmer. He was married to Ida M. Pettit on January 2, 1925, in Sandusky.

Bruce S. Millerd, 73, Gladwin, died Saturday in Midland Hospital Center following a short illness.

 

Born June 28, 1909, in Mount Clemens, Mr. Millerd had retired from the maintenance department of Detroit Edison. He had been a resident of Gladwin since 1974.

 

He married Ester Tuscany on Feb. 7, 1948 in Utica. Hee leaves his wife; daughters, Nancy Hull of Romeo and Mrs. Andy (Donna) Eaton of Beaverton; sister, Margaret Schantz of Pontiac; and four grandchildren.

The body was brought to Winegar Saturday, Oct. 12, and taken to his home at Arbutus, where services were held Monday afternoon, Oct. 14, conducted by Rev. J. H. Cornelius.

   Andrew Bryan Oard was born in Putnam county, Ohio, Dec. 15, 1896, In the spring of 1911 he came with his parents to Arbutus, their present home. He was called to serve his country Aug. 29, and left for Camp Custer Aug. 30, where he succumbed to the fatal epidemic.

   He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Oard, two brothers, Boyd Oard of Gladwin and James at home, and three sisters, Bertha Mullen and Irene Moekey, and Lydia of Montana, besides a host of friends and relatives to mourn the loss of "Billie," as he was known. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. One sister, Jennie Belle, preceded him to the better world.

   Darling Billie he has left us,

     And our grief we cannot tell,

   But we know the Saviour took him,

     And He doeth all things well.

Services were held Tuesday for Andrew J. Oard, who died Sunday, November 12 at the Kays Nursing Home. Andrew Oard was born February 20, 1863 to Peter and Lydia Oard in Allen county, Ohio. He moved to Gladwin county with his family in 1910. His wife and two children preceded him in death.

 

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Bertha Mullen of Polson, Oklahoma, Mrs. Lydia Sullivan of Rygate, Oklahoma, Mrs. Irene King of Detroit and Boyd and James of Buckeye township.

Cherlyn Ann Oard, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Oard, of Wooden Shoe Village, passed away at the home of her parents, on Thursday, August 31. She was born on July 13, 1950.

 

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the Reigle Funeral Home with burial in the Highland cemetery. The Rev. Sidney S. Rood, pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal church, officiated.

James Oard, 84, of 1023 Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1991, in the MidMichgian Regional Medical Center, Gladwin, after a long illness. Born in Lima, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1907, he had spent most of his life in Gladwin County. Mr. Oard was an operator for Dow Chemical Co. and retired in 1972. He also farmed. Mr. Oard and the former Mary Lehman were married June 22, 1929, in Flint. She preceded him in death July 13, 1990.

 

Surviving are 2 sons, Wilbur of Columbus, Ohio and Brad of Beaverton; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marjorie) Clapp of St. Louis; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Harold, July 15, 1985.

Mrs. Mary E. Oard, 80, of 1023 W. Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, July 13, 1990, in the Mid-Michigan Regional Medical Center, Midland, after a short illness. Born in Gladwin, June 22, 1910, she had spent her lifetime here. Mrs. Oard was a member of the Cedar River Chapel, Beaverton, and had been a volunteer for the Twin Council for The Aging. The former Mary Lehman, she was married to James Oard, June 22, 1929, in Flint.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, Wilbur of Columbus, Ohio and Brad of Beaverton; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marjorie) Clapp of St. Louis; a daughter-in-law, Agnes Oard of Beaverton; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harold, July 15, 1985, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Max R. Oard, Max R. Oard, 82, of Gladwin died Dec. 1, 2004 at his home. He was born Nov. 25, 1922 to Boyd and Virgie (Bushong) Oard in Gladwin. He married Betty Rivers on Aug. 4, 1946 in Gladwin and has been a lifetime resident of Gladwin County.
Max worked in the Midway Tools oil fields until 1953 and then worked as a Pipefitter at Dow Chemical in Midland until he retired in 1980. He was member of Dale United Methodist Church, and Gladwin Eagles Aerie 3292. Max liked to travel and enjoyed hunting and being home walking in his woods. He loved growing a garden.
He is survived by his wife Betty Oard of Gladwin; his children Robert Dennis (Connie) Oard and Linda (William) Russell, both of Gladwin, and Sally Whitman of Beaverton; his grandchildren, John Whitman, Tina Krocker, Sharon Klienhardt, Bob Russell, Tim Russell, Autumn Russell, Lisa Gingerich, Mike Oard and Kristine Oard; 12 Great grandchildren; his brother Gerald Oard of Gladwin; and his sisters Mary Jane Brushaber and Betty Myers, both of Beaverton. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Orville Oard.  Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 4 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with Pastor Linda Jo Powers officiating. Burial took place at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Memorial contributions may be made to Dale United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice.

Orville B. Oard, 81, of Gladwin died Saturday, April 15, 2000 at the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Born Nov. 25, 1918 in Gladwin County, he was the son of S. Boyd and Virgie (Bushong) Oard. Orville married Irene Emmendorfer, Oct. 18, 1947 in Saginaw. He was self-employed in the excavating business for 48 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 19th Station Hospital in Iran and is a lifetime member of VFW Post 7303. Orville was a trustee with the Hay Township Board for many years. He was an avid hunter, loved to travel, and enjoyed his grandchildren.

   Besides his wife he is survived by seven daughters, Carolyn Swanstra of Gladwin, Cathryn and husband Harold Loar of Beaverton, Cheryl-Oard-Irish of Flint, Cynthia and husband Charles Simmons of Alma, Patricia Oard-Moore and husband Richard Moore of Midland, Pamela Oard of Niles, and Barbara and husband Scott Buckley of Danville, Va.; one son, William and wife Darlene of Gladwin; two brothers, Max and Gerald, both of Gladwin; two sisters, Mary Jane Brushaber and Betty Jean Myers, both of Beaverton; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cherlyn Anne in 1950.

   Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Rev. James Hoggard officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 1 p.m. today (Wednesday).

Tony J. Pettinato, 72, of 1818 S. Hockaday Rd., Gladwin, died Thursday, June 9, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after an illness of 6 months. Born in Windsor, Ont., Can., May 1, 1916, he moved to Gladwin County in 1978 from East Detroit. Mr. Pettinato was a rodbuster for Reinforced Ironworkers, Local 426, Detroit, and retired May 1, 1978, after 45 years. He served in the Army during World War II and was a past commander of Shafer-Rachelle VFW Post 6782, East Detroit. Mr. Pettinato and the former Margaret Costie were married Aug. 17, 1946, in Detroit.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, John of Richmond and Jim of Hartland, Wisc..; 2 daughters, Mrs. Paul (Patricia) Hastie of Mt. Clemens and Mrs. Terry (Sally) Walt of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary Iannicello of Windsor and Mrs. Frances Herbert of Algonac; and 16 grandchildren.

Lorraine E. Proctor, 54, of Beaverton, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1995 at Michigan Regional Medical Center-Gladwin. Born March 22, 1941 in Saginaw, she resided in Gladwin County most of her life. The former Lorraine Bradley married Jackie Proctor June 13, 1959 in Saginaw. He preceded her in death May 29, 1990.

Lucille E. Rau, 57, of 1890 Long Rd., Beaverton, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 1991, in the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Midland after battling cancer for about 9 months. Born in Mt. Morris Township, March 5, 1933, she moved to Gladwin County and then moved away. She returned to the county in 1975. Mrs. Rau was a member of the Round Lake Baptist Church and was a board member of Awana. The former Lucille Doyle, she was married to Frank Rau, June 8, 1957, in Gladwin.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Wright of Beaverton; 3 sons, Timothy of Stockton, Calif., Jeffery of Great Falls, Mont. And Daniel, stationed in Korea; her mother, Cecile Doyle of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Glenn of Beaverton and Robert of Phoenix, Ariz.; step-mother-in-law, Alma Rau of Gladwin; and 8 grandchildren.

Gordon Lee Reynolds , 50, of Beaverton, died suddenly March 2, 2003, at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gladwin. He was born Sept. 23, 1952, to Gobel and Alice (Ozella) Reynolds in Detroit. Mr. Reynolds moved to Gladwin County 14 years ago from Garden City. He married Vickey (Gennette) Reynolds on May 18, 1984, in Gladwin. She survives him.

Besides his wife, Mr. Reynolds is survived by four daughters, Danielle Reynolds and Samantha Reynolds of Beaverton, Paula McIntosh of Gladwin, and Janice Bales of Westland; one son and daughter in law, Tim and Hope Caraher of Fowlerville; two brothers, Joe and Mary Reynolds of Indiana, and Steve and Theresa Reynolds of Tennessee; two sisters, Annette and Jim Rudd of South Lyon and Paula and Ernie Cannon of Tennessee; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Debbie Reynolds.

Lawrence S. Riley, 77, of 2553 Smith Rd., Beaverton, died Saturday, Jan. 14, in the Saginaw V.A. Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Silver Creek, Neb., Oct. 27, 1911, he came to Gladwin County several years ago. Mr. Riley farmed and served in the Army during World War II. He was a life member of the Cedar River Riding Club and a member of the American Dairy Goat Association.

Virginia Schriber, 85, of Gladwin died April 6, 2005 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. She was born in Detroit on March 17, 1920 to Ross and Cora (Dorland) Shelman. She married Herbert Schriber in Detroit on Oct. 16, 1937. She was a homemaker and lived in Gladwin County since 1979, having previously resided in Livonia. She was a member of Gladwin Eagles Aerie 3292.

Surviving are nine children, Geraldine (John) Orso of Beaverton, Gladys Haner of Gladwin, Sandy (Jack) Wilkinson of Beaverton, Nancy (Raymond) Skaggs of Arizona, Roy (Sue) Schriber of Ortonville, Linda (Mike) Dobbs of Rochester Hills, Thomas (Jeanne) Schriber of Livonia, Terry (Mike) Morehead of Redford Township, and Herbert Schriber of Gladwin; 16 grandchildren and 29 Great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Schriber; her parents; her daughter, Virginia; her granddaughter, Kimberly Persh; and two sisters, Irene Gennette and Elnora Shelman.

James B. Seckman, 72, of Beaverton, died Monday, July 3, 1995 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center - Midland following a short illness. Born Dec. 27, 1922 in Shirley, W. Va., he resided in Gladwin County most of his life. Mr. Seckman worked as a pipe fitter for 37 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Local 85, Plumbers & Pipe Fitters, Saginaw. Mr. Seckman owned and operated Jim's Midway Store from 1972-1978 and Jim's Small Engine Repair & Welding since 1984. He married the former Pearl Whiteman Dec. 12, 1942 in Gladwin.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Michael and wife Dawn of Greybull, Wyo., and Allen and wife Sandra of Beaverton; 2 daughters, Kathy and husband John Kustra of Beaverton, and Linda and husband Elton Frye of Beaverton; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.    Paul E. Seelbach , 64, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at MidMichigan Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Carlinville, Illinois on Nov. 19, 1938 to Henry and Eunice (Lambert) Ehlers. He married the former Nora Jean Todd on Aug. 30, 1985 in Gladwin; she survives him. He was a plant manager for Retro Fit Machine-Ferguson Machine. He also owned and operated the Seelbach Club 30 from 1985 until 1999. Paulie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Albright Shores FOE.

   Surviving besides his wife, Nora; a son, Lance (Naomi) Seelbach of Maine; a daughter, Trina (Geoff) Putman of Fairfax, Virginia; two grandchildren, Austin and Katie Putman; two step-daughters, Kristina Grabowski of Minneapolis and Tamara Grabowski of New Mexico; his father-in-law Robert Todd of Florida; his aunt Fern Benetti of Gladwin; one brother, Jim (Darlene) Ehlers of California; and a sister, Shirley (Bob) Marsh of New Mexico.

Fred E. Shaver, 66, of Gladwin, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 1994 at the Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma. Born July 25, 1928 in Detroit, he was a self-employed heavy equipment operator. He married the former Mary Tackett on Jan. 26, 1981 in Clintwood, Va. They moved to Gladwin in January 1993 from Howell.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Fred of Gladwin; 4 daughters, Debra and husband Gary Boynton, Nancy and husband David Lambdin, Lynda and husband Michael Donagan, and Pamela Shaver, all of Gladwin; mother, Cleta Shaver of Holiday, Fla.; 2 sisters, Delores Decker of Holiday, Fla. and June Bodenham of Ketterington, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred, in 1992.

Mary Maxine Shaver, 55, of Gladwin, died Monday, May 19, 1997 at her home. She was born May 2, 1942 in Stassordville, Ky. to Hershel and Ethel Friazier Tackett. Mary married Fred Shaver Jan. 26, 1981 in Clintwood, Va. He preceded her is death Sept. 18, 1994.

They came to Gladwin in 1993 from Howell.

 

She is survived by one son, Fred Shaver of Beaverton; one daughter, Pamela Shaver of Gladwin; four stepdaughters, Debra and husband Gary Boynton, Nancy and husband David Lamdin, Lynda and husband Michael Donagan, all of Gladwin, and Kathy Lem of Whitmore Lake; her mother, Ethel Tackett of Paintsville, Ky.; several brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Carrie A. Shears, 65, of 676 Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Saturday, Aug. 30, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following a long illness. Born in Gladwin on August 30, 1911, she had spent her lifetime here. The former Carrie Druley, she was married to Charles Shears on January 4, 1930, in Gladwin.

 

Besides her husband,she is survived by 6 sons, Louis, Sam and William of Beaverton, Albert of Sweet Port, La., John of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Joseph of Pontiac; 3 daughters, Mrs. A. J. (Mary) Jenks, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Dings and Mrs. Michael (Ruth) Vickery of Pontiac; one brother, George Druley of Flint; 4 sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smith and Mrs. Gladys Cottrell of Beaverton, Mrs. Frances Winters of West Branch and Mrs. Irene Crocker of Midland; 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

John W. Shears, 59, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Midland after a long illness. Born Sept. 21, 1937 in Gladwin, he had previously lived in Chicago, Ill. He had been employed by Johnstrud Trucking, Iowa, retiring in 1996 after 4 years. John married the former Rosalee Hughes, Feb. 2, 1958 in Vermillion, S.D.

   Surviving are four sons, Skip of Gladwin, Scott and Shane of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Shawn and wife Carnelia of Wichita, Kan.; five brothers, three sisters, three grandchildren, Skyler, Shawn and Christina Shears. Cora E. Shelman, 93, of 1742 S. Long Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, Jan. 4, in the Ogemaw Geriatric Center, Rose City, following a long illness.

Born in Port Huron Oct. 14, 1891, she came to Gladwin County in 1946 from Detroit. She was

a member of the Gladwin Assembly of God Church. The former Cora Dorland, she was married to Ross H. Shelman in September 1914 in Detroit. He preceded her in death Feb. 26,1891, she came to Gldwin County in 1946 from Detroit. She was a member of the Gladwin Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Morin, Redford Township, Elnora Shelman, Mrs.

Virginia Schriber and Mrs. Irene Gennette of Beaverton; 2 sisters, Mrs. Marie VanCamp of Jerome and Mrs. Alfretta Neilson of Smithfield, Tex.; 20 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev.

Elnora R. Shelman, 78, of 1742 Long Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, May 13, 1994, in the Gladwin

Nursing Home, after a long illness. She was born in Dundee, N.Y., on Sept 28. 1915, and came to Gladwin in 1946 from Detroit. Surviving are 2 sisters, Virginia Schifber and Irene Gennette, both of Beaverton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents,

Ross and Cora Shelman; and one sister, Beatrice Morin in 1990. Rites were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Donald Potter officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 5-18/1994 Column – 3 Page – 2.

 

ROSS H. SHELMAN (5 JULY 1893 – 26 FEB 1974)

 

Ross H. Shelman, 80, of Buckeye Township, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Bay City Mercy Hospital following a long illness. Born in Pennsylvania on June 5, 1893, he had lived in Gladwin County since 1946. Mr. Shelman was a self-employed carpenter and a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was married to Cora Gloger in September 1914, in Detroit.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Morin of Redford Township, Eleanor Shelman of Beaverton, Mrs. Virginia Schriber of Livonia and Mrs. Irene Gennette of Farmington; one sister, Mrs. Ida Geisheck of Florida; 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Warren L. Shipley, 66, of 2741 River Rd.,' Beaverton, died Monday, Feb. 29, in Valley Baptist Medical Center, Harlingen, Texas, after a long illness. Born in Ozark, June 20, 1921, he moved to Gladwin County permanently in 1983, from Brighton. Mr. Shipley was in plant services at the Wixom Plant of Ford Motor Co. for 26 1/2 years, until retiring in 1983. He was a former member of the Gladwin F.O.E. 3292 and a member of Local 36, Wixom.

Mr. Shipley was married to the former Nancy Nichols June 11, 1977, in Howell. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Roger of Mesa, Ariz.; 2 daughters, Mrs. Sharon Sanders of Westland and Mrs. Frank (Sandra) DeCriscio of Kenton; 3 step-sons, Lawrence and Lee Thurston of Howell and Jerry Turrell of Brighton; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Bernice Kasenow of Wixom and Mrs. Deanna Montgomery of Howell; 2 brothers, Herbert of Trout Lake and Earl of Hood River, Ore.; 3 sisters, Edna Vertz and Helen Lovegrove of Moran and Marjorie Hopper of Hood River, Ore.; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

NORMAN EDWARD SKAGGS (18 MARCH 1928 - 4 DEC 1997)

 

Norman Edward "Dude" Skaggs, 69, of Gladwin, died suddenly, Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Midland. Born March 18, 1928 in Pickford, he lived in Gladwin since 1976 and previously lived in Westland. Norman married the former Marguerite Gennette, Sept. 19, 1968 in Taylor. He had been employed by Store Equipment Company in Detroit, retiring in 1973 as a refrigeration installer. He was currently employed in maintenance at Gladwin Mental Health. He was a member of VFW Post 7303 in Gladwin County.

   Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Frank of Dearborn and William of Gladwin, Joseph and wife Marjorie Maresh of Taylor; two daughters, Brenda Ferguson of Milan and Joann and husband Juerg Mutti of St. Clair Shores; one sister, Beulah Armstrong of Dafter; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Cecil Skaggs, 76, of 1918 S. M-18, Gladwin, died Thursday, May 18, 1989 in Saginaw Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Aug. 8, 1912, he moved to Gladwin County 15 years ago. Mr. Skaggs was a retired member of the Ohio Operating Engineers. He served in the Army during World War II.

   Surviving are 2 brothers, William of Black River and Norman of Gladwin; and one sister, Beulah Armstrong of Dafter. Rites were held Monday at 11 a.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. Eddie Skaggs, 26, of Holland and formerly of Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997

at his home in Holland. Born Aug. 18, 1970 in Garden City, he had been employed by

Bruscaut Environmental in Holland as a machinist. He graduated in 1988 from Gladwin High School, and was involved in wrestling, football and all sports.

 

Surviving are his father, William A. Skaggs of Dearborn; mother, Deborah Skaggs of Detroit; one sister, Gina Paisley of Gladwin; one half brother, Lucas Skaggs of Cadillac; grandparents,

Norma and Marge Skaggs of Gladwin and Esther Everett of Lake Orion; and fiancee, Kelly Kovacs of Holland.

 

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with the Rev.

BETTY JANE SMITH (1931 – 6 MAY 1939)

 

GIRL, 7, KILLED IN AUTO CRASH

 

A seven-year-old Buckeye township child was killed Saturday afternoon in a two-car automobile

collision involving, members of the same family who were close neighbors.

 

Betty Jane Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, died of injuries suffered when the car in

which she was riding struck one driven by a cousin on the River road, one and one-half miles south of Gladwin.

 

The car in which Betty Jane, her mother, and five brothers and sisters were riding was. traveling

north on the River road at about 5: p. m. and was driven by a cousin, Roy Collins, according to

Sheriff Ray Cowell. At an intersection near the Smith home, Collins told the Sheriff, he saw another car backing into the highway to turn around, but paid little heed as he expected the car

to stop.

 

Driver of the car which was turning around was Leonard J. Riley, another cousin and neighbor.

He apparently failed to observe the on-coming machine, and the two crashed at the corner.

 

Betty Jane, sitting near an open window, was thrown from the car by the impact. When

the cars struck, Collins lost control and his auto rolled onto the child, crushing her body against

the road.

 

None of the other passengers of either car were injured. The child was rushed in Riley's car to the

Gladwin Hospital, but was dead before treatment could be administered.

 

All persons riding in the cars are related and live in the vicinity of the accident. In the car with the victim were her mother, her sisters, Barbara and Marian, and her brothers, Robert, Jack, and James.

 

In the Riley car were his wife, Gertrude, and their one-year-old child.

 

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in the Assembly of God Church. The Rev. A. Biggs officiated. Burial was in Buckeye township cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 5-10/1939 Column – 7 Page – 1.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home for Brian Scott Smith, two-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smith, of Cadillac, who died suddenly July 4.

 

He was born May 2, 1964 in Cadillac. Besides his parents, survivors include his grandparents, Mrs. Flora Smith, Gladwin, and Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Allen, of Grand Rapids; and his great grandmother, Mrs. Helen VanDyke, of Grand Rapids.

FLORA ALICE SMITH --- Flora Alice Hall, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Hall, was born in Bedford county, Penn., June 16, 1858, and departed this life March 29, 1919, at 10 a.m., after a lingering illness of about six years from cancer and heart trouble. She with her parents moved from Bedford county, Penn. to Noble county, Indiana, in the year of 1865 where she resided until she was united in marriage to James Smith of Williams county, Ohio, where they resided until 1910 when they purchased a farm and moved to Gladwin county, Mich., making their home here for five years. then returned to Williams county, Ohio, residing there three years, then returning to Gladwin county in Oct. 1918. Although she never united with any church she was a true Christian, a loving mother and loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, James Smith, and 10 children Rosa Countryman of Elkhart, Ind., Libby Burleu and Thomas Smithof Williams county, Ohio, S. C. Smith and Letha Rhinehart of Calhoun county, Clara Brown of Branch county, Mich. Cody Smith of Williams county, Ohio, now with the army of occupation in Germany; Elma Arkwright, Hazel Rise and Laura Smith of Arbutus; three brothers, three sisters, 20 grandchildren and one great grandchid.

Dearest mother thou has left us, And our loss we deeply feel, But 'tis God who bereft us; He can all our sorrows heal. Funeral services were held at the house March 31, 1919, conducted by Wm. B. Neff. Interment at Arbutus cemetery.

Flora May Smith, 70, of 3748 Monroe St., Midland and formerly of Gladwin, died Friday, July 15, in the Midland Hospital following a long illness. Born in Jackson on July 26, 1906, she had spent most of her life in Gladwin until moving to Midland 10 years ago. Mrs. Smith was employed for several years at Dell Smith Furniture in Gladwin and was a member of the Midland Assembly of God Church.

 

The former Flora Riley, she was married to Lawrence Smith in 1929 in Jackson. He preceded her in death in 1960. Surviving are 6 sons, Robert of Midland, Jack and Richard of Gladwin, James and Delbert in Florida and Frank of Oregon; 2 daughters, Mrs. Barbara Shitsman and Mrs. James (Merian) White of Midland; 6 brothers; 5 sisters; 25 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Gladwin for John L. Smith 71, who died at his home in Gladwin on Thursday following an illness of six years. The Rev. Burdette Faulk officiated and burial was in Arbutus Cemetery, Buckeye Township.

 

Born on May 12, 1889 he came to Gladwin County 26 years ago from Indiana. In July, 1927, he was married to the former Flora M. Riley at Jackson. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Gladwin.

 

Survivors include his wife, Flora two daughters, Mrs. Dean Hitsman and Mrs. James White, of Midland; six sons, Robert, of Midland, Lawrence, James, and Richard, of Grand Rapids, Frank and Delbert at home; three brothers, Charles, Henry and Leonard, of South Bend, Ind. Lawrence "Jack" Smith, 46, of Midland, died February 25, while visiting his brother in Tampa, Fla. He was born on October 4, 1934, in Gladwin and attended Beaverton schools. Mr. Smith served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and was a member of the Sanford American Legion Post 443.

   Surviving are 2 sons, Larry with the Marines in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and Garry of Sparta; 2 daughters, Cindy of Cedar Springs and Lynn of Sparta; 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

Mrs. Bernetta E. Snell, 67, of 2739 Whitney Beach Rd., Beaverton, died Thursday, June 2, at Gladwin Area Hospital following a short illness. Born in Holly, she had been a resident of Gladwin County for the past 7 years, moving here from Pontiac. The former Bernetta Howe and Charles H. Snell were married August 15, 1937, in Detroit.

 

Survivors include her husband, Charles; a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Bernetta) Strong of Beaverton, and 3 other daughters; 4 sons, 1 brother and 1 sister; 40 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Charles H. Snell, 80, of Whitney Beach Road, Beaverton, died Thursday, July 4, 1985, at Gladwin Area Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1904, in Michigan. He was retired as a machinest for Pontiac Motors in Pontiac for 20 years, retiring in 1969. He has been a resident of Gladwin County since 1970. He married the former Bernetta Howe, Aug. 15, 1937, in Detroit; she died June 2, 1977.

   He leaves daughters, Charlene Hamilton of Flagstaff, Ariz., Nancy Porter of Trustville, Ala., Lola Burton of Pontiac and Bernetta Strong of Beaverton; sons, Jack Snell of Beaverton, Marvin Snell, William Snell both of Pontiac; 50 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and a brother, Clayton Snell of Corunna. He was preceded in death by a son Charles Snell in 1980; a daughter Jean Current in 1977.

Darwin L. Spencer, 25, of 107 Ahmeck St., Copper City, died Friday, Sept. 11 of injuries received in an auto accident on Waldo Rd. in Midland County. Born in Clare May 19, 1962, he had moved to Copper city 2 months ago from Beaverton. Mr. Spencer was a roofer in construction. Mr. Spencer and the former Tara Porter were married June 18, 1982, in Ft. Worth, Texas.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Thresa and Ronda, at home; his parents, Lloyd and Shirley Spencer of Beaverton and Betty and Ronald Weber of Midland; a brother, Eugene Spencer of Beaverton; a sister, Ann Spencer of Midland; 3 step-brothers, Eugene and Jeffrey Couture of Beaverton and Douglas Weber of Midland; 3 step-sisters, Ronda, Connie and Cheryl Weber of Midland; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Melissa Skym and Mrs. Grace Dudley of Midland, Mrs. Lillian Gould of Florida and Mrs. Fern White of St. Helen.

Ivan C. Spencer, 12, of 1365 Texas Lane, Midland, died Friday, Sept. 11 of injuries received in an auto accident on Waldo Rd. in Midland County. He was born in Beaverton, Dec. 20, 1974 and moved to Midland in 1981 from Beaverton. He was a 7th grade student at Central Intermediate School in Midland. JAMES RONALD SPENCER, JR (15 JUNE 1969 - 15 OCT 2002)

 

   James Ronald “JR” Spencer , age 33, of Gladwin, Michigan (formerly of Ypsilanti) passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident. He was born on June 15, 1969 in Madison Heights to James and Sharon (Vipond) Spencer, Sr. He married the former Cecilia Lloyd in Florida on June 15, 1997. She survives him.  Her grew up in Gladwin County and graduated from Capacs High School in 1987. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a veteran of Desert Storm.

   Surviving besides his wife Cecilia are four children, James R. Spencer III of Gladwin, Heather M. Spencer of Lapeer, Sara Spencer of N. Carolina, and Ashley Spencer of Lapeer; his mother Sharon Spencer of Gladwin; grandmother Josephine Vipond of Gladwin; brother Michael McIntyre of California; sisters Kathryn (Alan) Thomas and Holly Spencer, both of Gladwin, and Donna (Matt) Fullerton of Garden City; and mother in law Patricia Lloyd of Gladwin. He was predeceased by his father James R. Spencer Sr.

   Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2002 at the Sisson Funeral Home. Rev. Phil Hortop officiated, with burial in Arbutus Cemetery. James R. Spencer Sr. 46, of 1920 Long Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly Monday, Sept. 23, while working in Detroit. Born in Cass City, Feb. 25, 1941, he moved to Gladwin County in 1973 from Detroit. Mr. Spencer was a self-employed sub-contractor for a heating and ventilation installation company. He served in the Marine Corps form 1958 to 1960.  Mr. Spencer and the former Sharon Vipond were married Feb. 11, 1968, in Detroit.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, James Jr. of Capac; one daughter, Holly Spencer of Beaverton; his mother, Mrs. Isabella Pond of Capac; a step-son, Michael McIntyre of Midland; a step-daugther, Mrs. Nicky (Kathryn) Searfoss of Gladwin; a half-sister, Mrs. Reta Brantley of Pontiac; and 2 grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.

George Stenger, 66, of 388 W. Knox Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 28, at his home. Born in Germany on July 25, 1912, he came to Gladwin County in 1957 from Kent County. Mr. Stenger was a retired machine operator for Robison Industries and a veteran of World War II. He was married to the former June Bernard on March 9, 1947, in Midland.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Daniels of Cleveland, Mrs. Mary Rohrer and Mrs. Cheryl Powell of Grand Rapids and Katherine of Goshen, Ind.; 4 sons, Charles in the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill., John of Beaverton, George of California and Kenneth of Hemlock; one brother, Rudolph of Grand Blanc; 3 sisters, Mrs. Pauline Lehr of Freeland, Mrs. Sophis Loper of Flint and Mrs. Amelia Pengot of Pinconning; and 12 grandchildren.

Earl L. Suffel, 69, of Beaverton, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin after a short illness. Born in Flint, he lived in Gladwin County for 13 years and previously lived in Flint. He worked as a machinist for Buick Motors in Flint, retiring in 1980 after 31 years.

Earl married the former Joyce Lagness, May 24, 1952 in Flint.

 

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Debora and husband Jeffrey Jolly, and Gail Kline, all of Flint; one son, Thomas and wife Thelma of San Diego, Calif.; five brothers; seven

grandchildren; and two great grandsons.

 

Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with Rev. Kenn Golay officiating. Burial will be Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Joyce Suffel, Joyce Suffel, 74, of Beaverton, passed away Jan. 9, 2004 at MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland. She was born April 24, 1929 to Earl and Josephine (Valincourt) Lagness in Midland. She married Earl Suffel on May 24, 1952 in Flint. He predeceased her in 1998. She worked as a waitress at Higgins Restaurant. She was a resident for 18 years, coming from Flint. She belonged to V.I.G.O.R., Beaverton.

She is survived by her daughters: Debora (Jeffrey) Jolly of Flint and Gail Kline of Beaverton; Son, Thomas (Thelma) Suffel of San Diego, California; Seven grandchildren; Five Great-grandchildren; Sisters: Margaret Knack of Millington, Emma Shroder of Wisconsin, Elizabeth Peters of Washington and Beverly Morrison of North Carolina; Brothers: Robert Lagness of California, Earl Lagness Jr. of Michigan, and Gerald Lagness of Herron.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother, William; and sisters Irene Wilson and Geraldine Stevenson. Funeral Services will be Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin. A burial will follow at Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton.

Dora G. Todd, 63, of Lake worth, Fla., and formerly of Gladwin, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999 in Florida. Born Nov. 7, 1935, she was the daughter of Oral and Virginia Luscomb Floyd. She

married Robert Todd, April 12, 1952 in East Detroit.

 

They moved to Gladwin in 1968 and to Florida in September 1994. She was a member of the Wooden Shoe United Methodist Church.

 

Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Nora and husband Paul

Seelbach of Gladwin, and Lora and husband Ken Perkins of Sanford; three sons, Robert Jr.

and wife Becky of Beaverton, Daniel and wife Brenda of Clare, and Jerry and wife Debbie of Sanford; two brother, David Floyd of Columbiaville, and Thomas Floyd of Sterling Heights; 20

grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Jennie A. Vail, 85, of Buckeye Township, died Sunday, October 21, at the Gladwin Area Hospital following a long illness. Born in Lapeer County August 5, 1888, she came to Gladwin County 80 years ago. She was a housewife.

 

Surviving are 2 sons, Oscar David Foutch and Lawrence A. Foutch, both of Flint; 2 daughters, Mrs. Inez Wiechec and Mrs. Minnie Malloy, both of Chicago; a brother, Frederick Williams of Flint; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Helen L. Vollmer, 62, of Gladwin died March 16, 2006 at her home in Hay Township following a long illness. She was born in Detroit on Aug. 28, 1943 to Webb J. and Mary Ellen (Lindsey) Gibson. She lived in Gladwin County since 1974, previously residing in Davisburg. She was the Owner and Operator of White Star Bar. She was a member of Gladwin Eastern Stars and Charter member of Clarkston Eagles. Surviving are her daughter, Deanna (Richard) Couturier of Gladwin; her granddaughter, Lindsey Couturier of Gladwin; and her sister, Patricia (Lee) Peacock of Birmingham. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Lee, in 1997, and her parents.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 17 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with pastor Henry List officiating.

Mrs. Esther M. Voskuhl, 63, of 1985 Wieman Rd., Beaverton, died Saturday, May 2, in St. Mary’s

Hospital, Saginaw, after a short illness. Born in Jackson, Ky. July 22, 1923, she came to Gladwin County 12 years ago from Walled Lake. Mrs. Voskuhl was Hay Township clerk for a year and had been deputy township clerk for 7 years. She was a member of the Gladwin Eagles Auxiliary 3292 and past president of the Walled Lake Eagles Auxiliary 3492.

 

The former Esther Proffit, she was married to John Voshuhl Sept.4, 1961, in Commerce.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, C. Dwayne Miller of Buffalo, N.Y.; 3 daughters,

Robert L. (Bud) Wetherbee, 64, of 2025 S. M-30, Gladwin, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1989, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Romeo, Oct. 12, 1925, he moved to Gladwin County in 1982 from Royal Oak. Mr. Weatherbee was employed in sheet metal construction and retired in February 1983. He was a member of Sheet Metal Local 80 in Detroit and served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Weatherbee and the former Jean Barron were married Oct. 17, 1970, in Hazel Park.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Mark of North Carolina; 3 daughters, Cheryl of Dearborn, Robin of North Carolina and Sandra of Florida; 2 step-daughters, Gayle Wyatt of Madison Heights and Karen Staley of Interlochen; one brother, James of Saginaw; 2 sisters, Ruth Reibel of Royal Oak and Helen Fitzpatrick of Madison, Wisc.; and 15 grandchildren.

Born in Fresno, Calif., on October 3, 1929, she came to Gladwin County in April from Umatilla. She was married to Robert Will on September 28, 1963, in Reno, Nev.

Robert F. Will, 75, of 107 S. Washington St., Saginaw, died Tuesday, June 11, 1991, in the Bi-County Hospital, Warren, after a long illness. Born in Saginaw, May 7, 1916, he moved back to Saginaw from Hay Township 6 years ago. Mr. Will was a mechanic in auto and truck repair and also lumbered. He served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Will and the former Cora Retherford Anderson were married Sept. 28, 1963, in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death July 18, 1979.

   Surviving are 2 sons, Robert W. of Saginaw and Douglas of Chicago; 4 step-sons, Floyd Anderson of Ferndale, Andrew Anderson of Flint, James Anderson of Los Angles, Calif. and Dennis McCullough of San Leandro, Calif.; 2 step-daughters, Alberta Counce of Columbus, Ohio and Eleanor Thompson of Tavaris, Fla.; 22 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

   Myron "Roy" Williams, 76, died Sunday of a heart attack at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jennie Vail, in Buckeye Township after several years of ill health. Born on May 29, 1887, he came to Gladwin County from Lapeer County in 1898 and made his home near Bethel. A disabled veteran, Mr. Williams had never married.

   Survivors include two brothers Charles "Fred" Williams, of Flint, and Daniel F., of Vassar; a sister, Mrs. Vail, of Buckeye, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marie Williams, of Flint. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Miner Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Lathrop Jr. officiating. Burial was in Arbutus Cemetery under the auspices of V.F.W. Robert G. Willson, 68, of Beaverton and formerly of Saginaw, died Tuesday, June 25, 1996 at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. Born March 7, 1928 in Saginaw, he moved to Gladwin County in 1977. Mr. Willson worked as a food broker for UBC Marketing. He owned and operated the Double L Marina from 1977 to 1980 and Winegars Trading Post form 1980 to 1987. Mr. Willson was the Hay Township supervisor form 1983 to 1992. He was a member of the Gladwin Masonic Temple No. 397 F&AM and was named Mason of the Year in 1995. He was also a Shriner and a member of the Gladwin Eagles No. 3292. Mr. Willson was a member of the Wooden Shoe United Methodist Church and the Gladwin Area VFW Post 11256. He was post commander of the American Legion Post 0192 in Temperance, a member of the Eastern Star White Clover Chapter No. 84 and he also played one year for the Brooklyn Dodgers after high school. Mr. Willson married the former Patricia Peterman June 15, 1951 in Farmington, N.M.

   Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin. The Rev. Donald Haskell officiated and burial was in the Arbutus Cemetery. Graveside services were under the auspices of the Gladwin Area VFW Post 11256. A Masonic service was held at 7:30 p.m. last Wednesday at the funeral home by the Masons of Masonic Lodge No. 397 F&AM, where Robert was a member. FLORA VIRGINIA WINEMAN (13 DEC 1909 – 4 MAY 1912)

Flora Virginia Wineman, daughter of Charles E. and Mary E. Wineman, died very suddenly from convulsions. She was born Dec. 13, 1909 and died May 4, 1912, aged 2 years, 4 months and 21 days. Funeral services were held at the family residence on May 6. She was laid to rest in the Arbutus cemetery.

 

She leaves to mourn her loss mother, father, two brothers, three sisters and her aged grandparents of Gladwin.

 

She was a child gifted with an unusual talent of brightness of mind and will be greatly missed in the family circle. She was always singing. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Gladwin County Record dated 5-9/1912 Column – 4 Page – 4.

 

MARY ELIZABETH (EVAN) WINEMAN (27 MAR 1877 – 26 MAY 1917)

 

Wineman.--- Mary Elizabeth Evan, wife of Charles E. Wineman, died Thursday, May 26, of Bronchial pneumonia, at their home in Buckeye township, aged 40 years, 1 month and 29 days. She was born in Franklin county, Ohio, March 27, 1877, and was married to Charles E. Wineman in 1895, near Payne, O. In 1902 they moved to Gladwin, where they have since resided. Her husband, seven children and four brothers remain to mourn her loss. One sister and one brother preceded her in their infancy. She was baptized in the M. E. church in 1879.

 

Services were conducted Tuesday by the Maccabee ladies and Rev. J. A. Phillips. Interment in Arbutus cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 5-31/1917 Column – 4 Page – 5.

George Herbert Woods, 62, of 1246 Howard Rd., Beaverton, died Friday, Dec. 2, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Buckeye Township on September 21, 1915, he attended the Gladwin schools. Mr. Woods was employed by the Gladwin County Road Commission and then as a crane operator for K.G. Marks, Inc. Bluewater Construction of Port Huron for 15 years. He retired in 1975 due to ill health.

 

Mr. Woods was married to the former Laura Mann on September 10, 1938, in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Terry and Gaylon, both of Beaverton; one sister, Mrs. Katherine Kimball of Remus; and 3 grandchildren. A brother, Homer, preceded him in death in 1970.

Arthur Nello Young, 58, of Beaverton, died May 19, 1992, at Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born Feb. 17, 1934, in Yawkey, W. Va. He was a resident of Gladwin County for 21 years. Mr. Young was a veteran of the Korean War. He was also a
life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7303 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 94. He was also a member of National Disabled American Veterans 240642. He married the former Dorothy Young Jan. 16, 1979, in Hollywood, Fla. She survives.

Other survivors included his step children, Raymond and Laverne Umphrey of Oklahoma, Robert Umphrey of Oklahoma, Vanda Umphrey of Oklahoma, Lloyd Umphrey of Beaverton, Mark Umphrey of Florida and Kelly Umphrey of Gladwin; 14 grandchildren; his mother, Nellie Young
of West Virginia and Richard Young of Wisconsin; and four sisters, Lucille Scheele of Tennessee, Loreta Laforest of Gains, Dorothy Owens of Big Rapids and Eva Rebecca Knouff of Florida. His father John W. Young; one brother, James C. Young; and one sister, Carol Jolane (Jo)
Dinsmore, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 22, 1992, from Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel, with Clarence Moore officiating. Military services will be conducted. Burial will be in Arbutus Cemetery in Beaverton. Visitation willl be at 5 p.m. today.
